Using the right Fire and Heat Resistant Sealant for your project

Using the right Fire and Heat Resistant Sealant for your project

Fireproof sealants are designed for use in brick chimneys and concrete fireplaces. These sealants must have the capacity to withstand high temperatures and direct heat from fires. The specially formulated sealant can withstand temperatures of up to 500°F with some formulas rated 572°F.

Using the right fire and heat resistant sealant for your project ensures you protect your property. At Sealant Supplies we carefully source our products to ensure we deliver reliable, high-quality products.

Choosing The Right Fire Sealant

When choosing a fire sealant, consider the materials in your fireplace. The sealant should bond with concrete and brick to effectively seal the joints and cracks. The sealant must also have a high-temperature resistance as the fireplace can get extremely hot.

Products such as ARBO XL 1075 are ideal for use in both blockwork and brickwork. This fire-resistant sealant intumesces when subjected to fire, blocking the passage of flames and smoke. Its excellent adhesion properties also make it ideal for use where sound reduction properties are required.

Another excellent fire-resistant product is the Everbuild Fire Seal 400 Fire Proof 380ml. This sealant is ideal for both interior and exterior applications and is available in a variety of colours to match your home. It also adheres to a variety of substrates including porous and non-porous surfaces.

The Everbuild Fire Seal 400 Fire Proof is ideal for applications that require a fire rating, joints in firewalls and partitions as well as fire-rated expansion joint applications.

Applying Fireproof Sealant

Depending on the product you choose, applying fireproof sealant varies. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before applying to find out information such as maximum temperature resistance and curing time.

Some products such as Everbuild Fire Mate can resist fire for up to 5 hours but have compatibility problems with some cPVC piping.

Once you have gathered all your materials and tools such as sealant guns, a blade, cleaning materials, prepare the surface by removing grease, dust and other contaminants. Ensure you have all your safety gear and protect your eyes.

Apply the fire sealant as instructed by the manual. We recommend inserting the fire sealant into a sealant gun and cutting off the tip of the nozzle. Gently squeeze the trigger and apply the fire sealant evenly.

Smooth the sealant using a wet cloth or a finger and use warm water to remove any stains. Excess sealant can be scraped off using a putty knife. Once you have finished the application, allow enough time to cure.

Do not apply weight to uncured fire sealant as it may crack or crumble.
