ARDEX AM 50 OCR is a versatile grey setting sand and cement render designed to facilitate quick tiling installations. This high-performance mortar simplifies the rendering process by requiring only the addition of water to create a slump-free mixture, which can be applied in a single coat ranging from 6mm to 20mm thick. Once applied, ARDEX AM 50 OCR allows for tiling in as little as 24 hours, significantly reducing project timelines. Its formulation ensures strong adhesion and durability on a variety of surfaces, making it ideal for both internal and wet areas such as showers. The render is particularly suited for use on well-prepared in-situ concrete walls, brickwork, and blockwork, providing a reliable foundation for subsequent finishes.
Key Points:
- Quick Tiling Capability: ARDEX AM 50 OCR allows for tiling to be completed just 24 hours after application, expediting project completion and reducing downtime.
- Preblended and Easy to Use: The render is preblended, requiring only the addition of water to create a slump-free mortar, simplifying the mixing and application process.
- Versatile Application Thickness: It can be applied in a single coat ranging from 6mm to 20mm thick, making it suitable for various rendering needs and surface imperfections.
- Wide Range of Uses: Ideal for rendering internal walls, including in showers, and suitable for in-situ concrete walls, brickwork, and blockwork, offering flexibility in application.
Coverage: ARDEX AM 50 OCR has an approximate coverage of 1.4kg per square meter per millimeter of thickness. For instance, a 25kg bag will cover approximately 3 square meters at a thickness of 6mm.
Storage and Shelf Life: To maintain its effectiveness, ARDEX AM 50 OCR should be stored in unopened packaging, elevated off the ground, and in a cool, dry environment away from excessive draughts. When stored under these conditions, the product has a shelf life of 12 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX AM 50 OCR is versatile and can be applied in a single coat ranging from 6mm to 20mm in thickness. It is ideal for rendering properly prepared in-situ concrete walls, brickwork, and block work. This product is well-suited for internal applications, including wet areas such as showers.
Surface Preparation
Ensure all surfaces are stable and any movement joints are carried through to the tiling surface. The substrate must be clean, firm, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, paint, gypsum plaster, and other materials that could hinder adhesion; mechanical preparation tools may be necessary. Concrete, brickwork, and similar substrates should be allowed to cure and shrink for a minimum of 6 weeks, as specified in BS 5385. For concrete surfaces, expose the aggregate according to BS 5385 guidelines. Small settlement cracks can be filled with rendering mortar, but if they result from structural movement, they may not be fully eliminated. Small cracks should be widened to improve adhesion. Metal components must be protected from corrosion, and reinforcements should be installed and fixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and BS 5385 standards. For dense surfaces such as glazed bricks or ceramic tiles, timber constructions, or old, non-removable paint finishes, use appropriate anchoring and reinforcement. Ensure all reinforcements and mesh are secured according to manufacturer’s guidelines and BS 5385. Proper substrate preparation is crucial for ensuring effective adhesion of the render mortar.
Mixing
For a 25kg bag of ARDEX AM 50 OCR, use approximately 4 to 4.5 liters of water. If mixing smaller quantities, achieve a slump-free consistency so the mortar can hold its shape and stay on the trowel. Add the ARDEX AM 50 OCR powder to the water in a clean container, stirring thoroughly until the desired consistency is reached. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a 10mm chuck and a variable-speed electric drill or a forced action mixer for larger batches will facilitate mixing. The mixture has a pot life of at least 2 hours, and it should be remixed every 20 minutes to maintain workability.
Application
Apply ARDEX AM 50 OCR at temperatures above 5°C. Start with a 1-2mm thick skim coat or bonding layer. Once this layer is still fresh, apply the remaining thickness. For depths over 20mm, consider applying in two layers: for instance, a 14mm base layer followed by a 6mm top layer. Ensure the top layer is always thinner than the base layer.
Treatments & Tiling
Depending on the render thickness and the porosity of the background, additional treatments such as wood floating can be carried out 2-3 hours after application at 20°C. For wet (non-submerged) areas, apply ARDEX WPC approximately 24 hours after application. Tiles can generally be fixed in 24 hours at 20°C using an appropriate ARDEX Cement-Based Tile Adhesive. Note that these times may vary with changes in site conditions, extending in cooler temperatures and shortening in warmer conditions.
