ARDEX X 77 S is a grey, fibre-reinforced, ultra-rapid setting and hardening cement-based adhesive designed for both floor and wall tiles. Its MICROTEC technology enhances adhesion and flexibility while offering advanced slump resistance, making it particularly suitable for large-format wall tiles. This adhesive is perfect for a variety of tiles, including ceramic, fully vitrified, glass, porcelain mosaics, and terrazzo. ARDEX X 77 S bonds effectively to numerous construction materials such as concrete, cement and sand renders, heated sub-floors, brickwork, gypsum plaster, and even existing ceramic tiled surfaces. With a BS EN 12004 C2 FTE S1 classification, it is recognized as an improved, fast-setting, deformable cementitious adhesive with reduced slip and extended open time. Remarkably, ARDEX X 77 S achieves full load-bearing strength after just 24 hours.
Key Points:
- Fibre-Reinforced & Ultra-Rapid Setting: Features MICROTEC technology for enhanced adhesion and quick hardening.
- Versatile Tile Compatibility: Suitable for ceramic, vitrified, glass, porcelain mosaics, and terrazzo tiles.
- Strong Bonding to Multiple Substrates: Adheres to various materials including concrete, renders, brickwork, and existing tiles.
- High Performance Classification: BS EN 12004 C2 FTE S1 rated, allowing for full load-bearing strength in just 24 hours.
Coverage: A 20kg bag of ARDEX X 77 S yields approximately 16.7 liters of mortar. It requires about 1.2kg of powder per square meter for each millimeter of adhesive bed thickness. Actual coverage will vary based on tile back profile, trowel type, and application technique. For example, using a 5mm x 5mm square-toothed trowel, a 20kg bag will cover around 9.5 square meters.
Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX X 77 S contains a reducing agent to manage Chromium VI levels. To ensure effectiveness, store the product in its unopened packaging, off the ground, in a cool, dry place, and protected from drafts. When stored correctly and used within 6 months of the packaging date, the reducing agent will maintain Chromium VI levels below 0.0002% (2ppm) of the total dry weight. Using the product beyond this period may increase the risk of allergic reactions. Do not use ARDEX X 77 S after the expiration date.

ARDEX X 77 S is perfect for installing ceramic and fully vitrified tiles, as well as other low-porosity tiles, glass and porcelain mosaics, and terrazzo. It forms a strong bond with a variety of construction materials, including concrete, cement and sand renders, screeds, heated sub-floors, brickwork, blockwork, gypsum plaster, plasterboard, and existing ceramic tiles. Classified as an ‘Improved fast-setting deformable cementitious adhesive with reduced slip and extended open time’ by BS EN 12004 C2 FTE S1, ARDEX X 77 S offers excellent setting and hardening properties. Within just 24 hours, it can support full loads, demonstrating its superior performance.
Surface Preparation: Before tiling, ensure that all surfaces are clean, firm, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other substances that could prevent proper adhesion. The surface must be strong enough to support the weight of the tiles. Allow the background to dry according to the relevant BS 5385 standards, and prime it if required before tile installation. Follow the installation guidelines outlined in BS 5385 and BS 8000: Part 11. The surface should meet Surface Regularity 1 standards, meaning any gap under a 2m straightedge should not exceed 3mm. ARDEX X 77 S can be applied to both dry and moist surfaces, but moisture-sensitive materials must be dry and stay dry after application. For showers, use ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection System to create a waterproof layer that protects moisture-sensitive backgrounds from water damage.
Mixing: Add ARDEX X 77 S powder to clean water in a clean container while stirring until you achieve a slump-free, workable mortar. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a 10mm chuck and a variable-speed electric drill simplifies the mixing process. The mix ratio is approximately 2¾ parts ARDEX X 77 S powder to 1 part water, with a 20kg bag requiring about 6.8 liters of water. Do not exceed the maximum water content. Adjust the adhesive consistency as needed for site conditions and materials. Apply the mixed adhesive at temperatures above 5°C. The pot life of the mortar is approximately 30 minutes at 20°C.
Application: Apply the mixed mortar to the prepared surface with a trowel, then use a suitably sized notched trowel to create a ribbed mortar bed. Set the tiles within the adhesive’s open time and press them into place using a twisting and sliding motion for full contact. For wall tiles in dry internal areas, ensure maximum contact between the tile and adhesive. Tiles smaller than 0.1 m² but heavier than 70% of the background’s weight capacity should be solidly bedded. Tiles of 0.1 m² or larger should also be solidly bedded. When tiling floors, wet areas, or external locations, butter the back of the tiles before placing them into the ribbed bed to avoid voids. Select the notched trowel size based on tile size, surface type, tile back profile, and required coverage. ARDEX X 77 S has an open time of up to 20 minutes, and tiles can be adjusted for up to 15 minutes at 20°C.
Grouting: Grouting can start once the tile bed has set sufficiently to hold the tiles in place. For wall tiles, ARDEX X 77 S usually sets enough to grout after 60 minutes at 20°C, depending on tile and background porosity. For floor tiles, it typically takes about 90 minutes at 20°C before the surface can handle foot traffic. These times may vary with temperature. Use ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout or ARDEX Epoxy Grout for grouting, particularly in areas needing chemical resistance and hygienic joints, such as commercial kitchens.
