Topcem Pronto is a pre-blended, ready-to-use mortar formulated with a special hydraulic binder and graded aggregates, designed for normal setting and controlled shrinkage. This product simplifies the mixing process by requiring only the addition of water, which eliminates the risk of errors associated with the proportions of binder and aggregates, thus ensuring optimal performance once cured. Topcem Pronto is particularly beneficial in areas where sourcing quality graded aggregates is challenging, such as urban job sites where traditional mixing logistics can be complicated. It offers the same working time as conventional cement-based mortars but cures much faster, making it an excellent choice for heated screeds due to its high thermal conductivity.

Key Points:

Easy to Use: Just mix with water, eliminating errors in binder and aggregate proportions.

Ideal for Urban Areas: Perfect for job sites where high-quality graded aggregates are difficult to source.

Fast Curing: Cures much quicker than conventional mortars, making it suitable for projects requiring rapid completion.

High Thermal Conductivity: Excellent for heated screeds, ensuring effective temperature regulation.

This product is ideal for creating bonded, unbonded, and floating screeds on both new and existing slabs, suitable for interior and exterior applications. It is particularly useful in situations where fast-drying screeds are necessary to expedite the installation of various flooring materials, including wood, PVC, linoleum, ceramic tiles, natural stone, and carpets. For example, screeds can be made trafficable within 12 hours and completely dry in just 4 days, allowing for the installation of wood parquet and resilient flooring like rubber and PVC. Additionally, these screeds are ready for ceramic tile installation after 24 hours and for natural stone flooring after 2 days. They are also effective for repairing screeds in high-traffic areas, such as supermarkets, shops, residences, and offices, and can form heated screeds without the need for plasticizers.

Preparing the substrate

For unbonded or floating applications, all substrates are suitable for receiving a Topcem Pronto screed. Isolate the substrate using a sheet of polyethylene or a similar material. For bonded screeds, ensure the substrate is dry, free from cracks, dust, loose particles, varnish, wax, oil, and gypsum residues. Any existing joints in the substrate must be carried through the screed.

Preparing the mix

Topcem Pronto can be mixed using various equipment, including rotating mixers, normal job site mixers, centrifugal mixers, truck mixers, or automatic pressure pumps. Mix one 20 kg bag of Topcem Pronto with 1.4 litres of clean water for a minimum of five minutes. Avoid altering the water amount, as this will compromise the mortar’s final performance. The mix should achieve a semi-dry consistency. Tamp and float the mix until a dense, smooth surface is achieved without bleeding.

Unbonded screeds (Min. 35 to 70 mm thick)

The Topcem Pronto mix must be laid on an isolating layer, such as a polyethylene sheet barrier, to allow for movement between the screed and the existing substrate. For compressible substrates, areas with piping, or when the thickness exceeds 60 mm, incorporate galvanized metal reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1. Spread the Topcem Pronto mix as you would with any cement-based screed mix: use screed guides, spread the mix, and tamp thoroughly before floating to improve the surface finish. Place isolating material (such as cardboard, polystyrene foam, cork, etc.) approximately 1 cm thick around the sides of the area and around columns before casting. If work is interrupted, insert steel rods 20 to 30 cm long and 3 to 6 mm in diameter, spaced 20 to 30 cm apart, into the screed (cut perpendicular to the substrate) to ensure a perfect connection between the new and old pours and to prevent uneven joints and cracks. The Topcem Pronto mix generally remains workable for a longer time than conventional screed mixes, although ambient temperatures may affect setting and drying times.

Floating screeds (Min. 35 to 70 mm thick)

The screed mix is prepared and applied similarly to an unbonded screed. However, floating screeds incorporate insulation or heating systems. The insulation must have high resistance to compression and should not compress more than 3 mm under the anticipated final load. Underfloor heating pipes should be located at least 25 mm below the surface of the screed, and reinforcing mesh should be placed over the pipes. Underfloor heating can be commissioned after 4 days.

Bonded screeds (From 10 to 70 mm thick)

Bonded screeds must be laid directly in contact with the substrate, which may consist of cementitious material or an existing ceramic or stone floor. For other substrates, consult the MAPEI Technical Services Department. After adequately preparing the substrate, create a bonding slurry using Topcem Pronto Slurry mixed with Planicrete SP, following the specified ratio. Apply a continuous, even layer of 2-3 mm using a large flat brush, scrubbing brush, or trowel. To ensure perfect adhesion, spread Topcem Pronto onto the slurry while it is still fresh (fresh on fresh technique). If the floor experiences high mechanical stresses, replace the Topcem Pronto Slurry cementitious bonding slurry with Eporip for construction joints, applying Topcem Pronto using the same method. For thicknesses exceeding 50 mm, it is recommended to incorporate galvanized metal reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1.
