This one-component, high-performance cementitious adhesive is lightweight, highly deformable, and offers an extended open time with excellent yield. It is easy to trowel and provides good buttering capacity, making it ideal for bonding various types of ceramic tiles and stone, particularly thin porcelain tiles. Suitable for both internal and external applications, it excels in large surface areas and is specifically designed to accommodate large-sized tiles without the need for double buttering. Its high buttering capacity ensures effective adhesion for thin porcelain tiles, even on thermal insulation systems.

Key Points

Versatile Bonding: Suitable for all types of ceramic tiles (double-fired, single-fired, porcelain, etc.) and stable stone on internal and external surfaces.

Ideal for Thin Tiles: Specifically developed for thin porcelain tiles, it allows for effective bonding on floors, walls, and façades without double buttering.

High Performance: Features extended open time, high yield, and easy trowelling, making it user-friendly for various applications.

Excellent Buttering Capacity: Particularly effective for laying thin porcelain tiles, including those on thermal insulation systems like the Mapetherm Tile System.

Suitable for bonding all types and sizes of ceramic tiles, including double-fired, single-fired, porcelain, klinker, and terracotta, on both internal and external surfaces.

Effective for bonding stable stone on internal and external surfaces, provided the stone is not sensitive to humidity.

Designed to bond various sizes of thin porcelain tiles on floors and walls, including external façades.

Capable of bonding all types of mosaics on internal and external surfaces, including swimming pools.

Allows for direct bonding of standard ceramic and porcelain tiles over cable undertile heating systems. It is specifically formulated for large-sized tiles to be installed on expansive surfaces without the need for double buttering. With its superior buttering capacity on tile backs, it is particularly well-suited for laying any type of thin porcelain tile using the double buttering technique.

Application Examples:

  • Bonding ceramic tiles (including double-fired, single-fired, porcelain, and glass mosaics) and stable stone tiles on conventional substrates such as:
  • Sand/cement screeds, self-levelling cementitious screeds, and anhydrite (after applying a suitable primer)
  • Heated screeds
  • Cementitious or lime-mortar renders
  • Gypsum plaster (with a suitable primer)
  • Plasterboard, precast panels, and cement-bonded panels
  • Waterproofing membranes, including Mapelastic, Mapelastic Smart, Mapelastic AquaDefense, and Mapegum WPS
  • Installing ceramic and stone tiles over existing tiled floors (ceramic, marble, etc.).
  • Applying tiles on exterior-grade plywood, P5 grade chipboard, and old, stable wooden floors.
  • Installing ceramic and stone tiles on balconies, terraces, and patios exposed to direct sunlight and thermal gradients.
  • Bonding to precast concrete walls and other concrete substrates.

Preparation of the Substrate

Substrates must be mechanically strong and free of loose materials, grease, oil, paint, wax, and other contaminants. They should also be sufficiently dry. Cementitious substrates must not shrink after the tiles are installed; therefore, in good weather conditions, render must cure for at least one week per centimetre of thickness, and cementitious screeds must cure for a minimum of 28 days. This is unless they use special MAPEI binders like Mapecem and Topcem or preblended mortars such as Mapecem Pronto and Topcem Pronto. If the surface is too hot from direct sunlight, cool it down with water, ensuring no standing water remains. Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds should be perfectly dry, hard enough for their intended use, and free of dust. Prime the substrate with Primer G (neat) or Eco Prim T Plus (diluted 1:2 with clean water). Substrates for thin porcelain tiles must be perfectly flat; use a smoothing compound from the MAPEI range to level the substrate as needed. Waterproof areas where required, using appropriate MAPEI waterproofing systems such as Mapelastic Smart, Mapelastic Aquadefense, and Mapeguard UM 35, before installing the selected tiles.

Mixing

Pour 5.2 to 5.7 litres of clean water into a clean mixing bucket. Add a 15 kg bag of Ultralite S2 powder and mix mechanically until a homogeneous, lump-free paste is achieved. Allow the mix to stand for 2 minutes, then stir briefly again. When mixed as described, the product remains workable for approximately 8 hours.

Applying the Product

Apply Ultralite S2 to the substrate using a notched trowel. Choose a trowel with a notch size that ensures complete buttering of the tile’s back. For optimal adhesion, first apply a thin layer of Ultralite S2 to the substrate with the smooth side of the trowel, then immediately add a thicker layer using the notched trowel according to the tile type and size, ensuring the backs of the tiles are well buttered. When installing tiles on floors, particularly in external or wet areas, ensure 100% coverage by spreading adhesive on the back of each tile for complete buttering. When working with thin porcelain tiles, it is recommended to also spread adhesive on the tile backs with the suitable notched trowel to eliminate gaps, minimizing the risk of fractures during use.

Installing the Tiles

Tiles do not need to be wet prior to installation; however, if the backs are particularly dusty, wash them by dipping in clean water. Place the selected tiles into the adhesive bed using a twisting/sliding motion to ensure full coverage. The open time for Ultralite S2 is at least 30 minutes under normal weather and humidity conditions. In less than ideal conditions (e.g., direct sunlight, dry wind, high temperatures) or if the substrate is very absorbent, this time may be reduced to just a few minutes. Regularly check the adhesive to ensure that a skin does not form on the surface and that it remains fresh. If a skin does form, reapply the adhesive with the notched trowel. Do not wet the adhesive surface if a skin has developed, as water will not dissolve the skin but will create a film that impedes bonding. Final adjustments to the tiles must be made within 45 minutes of installation, with a maximum compressed bed depth of 10 mm.
