Mapeguard WP 200 is a flexible, waterproofing and anti-fracture membrane made of soft polyethylene, ideal for direct application beneath ceramics, natural stone tiles, and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). It is commonly used in damp or wet areas of residential and commercial buildings, including bathrooms and showers in homes and hotels.
Applications include:
- Wet Area Waterproofing: Effective waterproofing in domestic and commercial bathrooms, private and commercial showers.
- Moisture-Sensitive Substrates: Ideal for gypsum plasters, gypsum fiber boards, and calcium sulfate screeds.
- Mineral Surfaces: Suitable for cement plaster, porous concrete, standard concrete, and cement-based screeds.
- Versatile Surface Compatibility: Provides reliable protection across various sensitive and mineral surfaces.
These properties make Mapeguard WP 200 an adaptable and robust choice for moisture-prone environments.
Preparation of the Substrate
Ensure the substrate is dry, stable, sound, flat, and free from loose particles or substances that might hinder adhesion. Remove any cement laitance, flaking areas, powder, grease, wax, or paint. Any cracks wider than 0.2 mm must be pre-repaired with Eporip or Eporip Turbo. For uneven cementitious substrates or ceramic surfaces with large joints, smooth and repair with suitable MAPEI products as recommended in the general catalog before installing Mapeguard WP 200.
Existing floors with ceramic, porcelain, klinker, or terracotta tiles must be well-bonded to the substrate and cleaned of any substances affecting adhesion (e.g., grease, oil, wax, paint). Clean the floor thoroughly with appropriate cleaning agents to ensure a bond-ready surface. For gypsum-based substrates like calcium sulfate screeds, plasterboard, or gypsum plaster, prime with Primer G or Eco Prim T at the recommended dilution (see product technical sheets). For non-absorbent substrates such as ceramic tiles or natural stone, prime with Eco Prim T or Eco Prim Grip.
Installing Mapeguard WP 200
- Cutting and Adhesive Application: Cut Mapeguard WP 200 to the required size before bonding. Use a MAPEI tile adhesive classified at least as C2 under EN 12004 or ISO 13007 (e.g., Keraquick S1, Ultralite S1, Keraflex, or Keraflex Maxi S1) applied with a 3×3 or 4×4 mm notched trowel. For LVT installations, use Mapeguard WP Adhesive. Refer to relevant technical data sheets for details.
- Laying the Membrane: Place Mapeguard WP 200 onto the fresh adhesive and press down uniformly from the center outward to remove air bubbles. Overlap adjacent sheets by at least 5 cm and seal them with Mapeguard WP Adhesive applied using a 3×3 mm notched trowel.
- Waterproofing Details: Seal floor-to-wall junctions and adjacent sheet overlaps with Mapeguard ST applied directly to Mapeguard WP 200 using Mapeguard WP Adhesive. Use Mapeguard IC and Mapeguard EC for internal and external corners, and Mapeguard PC for waterproofing around pipes, bonding all components with Mapeguard WP Adhesive. Apply Mapeflex MS45 around drain perimeters to ensure a secure waterproof junction.
Laying Tiles
After installing the waterproof membrane, tiles can be laid directly onto it. Choose an adhesive suitable for the type and size of tile. Once tiles are installed, grout the joints using epoxy grout (such as Kerapoxy CQ or Kerapoxy Design) or cementitious grout (Ultracolor Plus, Keracolor GG, or Keracolor FF with Fugolastic). Seal expansion or movement joints with Mapesil AC or Mapesil LM. For specific surfaces, environmental conditions, or intended uses beyond these recommendations, consult MAPEI’s Technical Services.
Installing LVT
For LVT floor or wall coverings, allow Mapeguard WP Adhesive to set for at least 3 hours after applying Mapeguard WP 200. Then, install LVT using Ultrabond Eco MS 4 LVT or Ultrabond Eco MS 4 LVT Wall. For further guidance, consult the relevant Technical Data Sheet and the Shower System 4 LVT System Data Sheet.
