ARDEX-FLEX FL is a rapid-setting, flexible, and water-repellent cement-based grouting compound, suitable for use without the need for a separate admix. It is available in 2.5kg, 5kg, and 10kg sizes with various color options, and classified as CG2 WA under BS EN standards, indicating improved cementitious grout with reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance. ARDEX-FLEX FL is ideal for grouting joints from 3mm to 15mm wide between porcelain, ceramic, non-moisture-sensitive natural stone, quarry tiles, extruded tiles, and glass blockwork, and can be used indoors and outdoors, including swimming pools. The grout becomes foot traffic-ready in 90 minutes at 20°C, but for chemical-resistant environments, ARDEX WA Epoxide Adhesive and Grout or ARDEX EG 18 PLUS Epoxide Grout are recommended.

Key points:

  1. ARDEX-FLEX FL is a rapid-setting, flexible, water-repellent grout available in multiple colors and sizes.
  2. It meets BS EN CG2 WA standards for improved cementitious grout with reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance.
  3. Suitable for grouting joints from 3mm to 15mm wide in porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, quarry tiles, and glass blockwork, for internal and external use.
  4. Ready for foot traffic in 90 minutes at 20°C; epoxide grout is recommended for environments exposed to chemicals or corrosive liquids.

Coverage: The coverage of ARDEX-FLEX FL depends on the tile size, joint width, joint depth, and a Grout Coverage Figure of 1.75. To estimate the grout needed for square or rectangular tiles, follow these steps (in mm):

  1. Add the tile length and breadth.
  2. Multiply by the joint width.
  3. Multiply by the joint depth.
  4. Multiply by the Grout Coverage Figure (1.75 for ARDEX-FLEX FL).
  5. Divide the result by the tile length, then by the tile breadth.
The final result is the grout required in kg per square meter. For example, for 150mm x 150mm tiles with 5mm joints: 300 x 5 x 5 x 1.75 ÷ 150 ÷ 150 = 0.58kg/m², meaning one 10kg bag will cover up to 17m² of tiling. Coverage may vary with different tile dimensions. For quick calculations, use the ARDEX online grout calculator: www.ardex.co.uk/calculator.asp.

Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX-FLEX FL should be stored in unopened packaging, off the ground, in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored properly, its shelf life is 12 months from the date shown on the packaging.

ARDEX-FLEX FL is classified under BS EN as CG2 WA, meaning it is an “improved cementitious grout” with enhanced features like reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance. It is ideal for grouting joints 3mm to 15mm wide between porcelain, ceramic, non-moisture-sensitive natural stone, quarry tiles, extruded tiles, and glass blockwork. The grout is weather-resistant, unaffected by water, and suitable for both internal and external tiling, in dry or wet areas, including swimming pools with non-aggressive water. It can be used on wall and floor tile joints, and freshly applied grout can support foot traffic after 90 minutes at 20°C. For areas exposed to chemical spillages or corrosive liquids, ARDEX WA Epoxide Adhesive and Grout or ARDEX EG 18 PLUS Epoxide Grout should be used.

Preparation
Ensure that tiles are securely fixed and the joints are clean, free of dust, excess adhesive, bedding mortar, or other debris.

Mix Proportions
The mix ratio is approximately 1 part water to 4 parts ARDEX-FLEX FL powder by volume. For a 10kg bag, use about 2 litres of water; for a 5kg bag, use 1 litre of water; and for a 2.5kg bag, use 0.5 litres of water.

Mixing
Gradually add ARDEX-FLEX FL powder to the measured water in a clean container, stirring thoroughly until a smooth, creamy mortar is achieved. For wider wall tile joints (over 10mm), adjust to a thicker consistency. The mixed grout has a working time of about 30 minutes at 20°C, with higher temperatures reducing and lower temperatures extending the working time.

Application
Apply the grout using a rubber squeegee or rubber-backed trowel, ensuring all joints are fully filled. Remove excess grout as you work. Wipe any residue from the tile surface with a damp sponge within 30 minutes of application. If left longer, lightly moisten the surface to ease removal. A fine mist spray can help emulsify grout residue. Once the grout hardens in the joints, any dry film on the tile surface can be polished off with a dry cloth. Ensure application is above 5°C.

Note
Certain ceramic, vitrified, porcelain, and natural stone tiles, especially those with textured, matt-glazed, or porous surfaces, may be prone to surface discolouration during grouting. Conduct a trial application to check for potential discolouration. For water-sensitive natural stone, consider using ARDEX MG Rapid Drying Marble and Natural Stone Grout. When using intense grout colours, apply a protective treatment to the tile surface to prevent grout retention in the tile’s pores or texture. Refer to BS 5385-1: 2018 (clause 7.3.3) for further guidance on coloured grout application. For additional advice, consult the tile manufacturer or distributor.
