ARDEX A 38 MIX is a specially formulated blend of ARDEX A 38 cement and graded sands, designed for ultra-rapid drying floor screeds in both internal and external locations. Featuring the innovative ‘RAPIDRY PLUS FORMULA’ Technology, this screed allows for foot traffic just 3 hours post-application, and enables the installation of ceramic and natural stone tiles within 4 hours, regardless of thickness, making it perfect for fast-track tiling projects. Resilient floor coverings like carpet, vinyl, and wood can be laid after 48 hours. With rapid strengthening capabilities, ARDEX A 38 MIX passes the BRE Screed (ISCR) Test in just 6 hours and exceeds the compressive and tensile bending strength of ordinary cement screeds within a day, which typically take 28 days to achieve. It is suitable for creating bonded, unbonded, and floating screeds, even in wet areas like swimming pools, and is ideal for large repairs to existing screeds where early foot traffic and rapid hardening are necessary.

Key Points:

  1. ARDEX A 38 MIX enables foot traffic in 3 hours and tile installation in 4 hours using ‘RAPIDRY PLUS FORMULA’ Technology.
  2. Resilient flooring can be installed after 48 hours, irrespective of thickness.
  3. It rapidly strengthens, passing the BRE Screed Test in 6 hours and outperforming ordinary screeds within a day.
  4. Suitable for bonded, unbonded, and floating screeds, including in wet areas and for large repairs.

Coverage: The material requirement for ARDEX A 38 MIX is approximately 1.85 kg per square meter for each millimeter of screed thickness. This translates to about 0.5 square meters at a thickness of 25 mm or 0.8 square meters at 15 mm per bag.

Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX A 38 MIX contains a reducing agent to control Chromium VI levels. It should be stored in its unopened packaging, elevated from the ground, in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored correctly and used within 12 months of the packaging date, the reducing agent will maintain its effectiveness, ensuring that the product contains no more than 0.0002% (2 ppm) soluble Chromium VI when mixed with water. Using the product after the declared storage period may increase the risk of allergic reactions.

ARDEX A 38 MIX is suitable for creating bonded, unbonded, and floating screeds in both internal and external locations, including wet areas like swimming pools. It is also effective for large repairs to existing cement/sand screeds, making it ideal for projects that require rapid hardening and early foot traffic.

Substrate Preparation for Screeding

Bonded Screed: To create a bonded screed with ARDEX A 38 MIX, first apply a grouting slurry made by diluting ARDEX P 51 Primer & Bonding Agent with an equal volume of water, then mix in ARDEX A 38 MIX until achieving a creamy consistency. For external locations or wet areas, ARDEX A 18 may be used. The concrete surface must be properly prepared with mechanized equipment to expose coarse aggregates and should be at least 6 weeks old before applying the screed while the slurry is still wet.

Unbonded Screed: Ensure the concrete slab is reasonably flat before applying a damp proof/slip membrane. For any uneven areas needing leveling, refer to the ARDEX A 46 datasheet for localized repairs or the ARDITEX NA datasheet for larger areas.

Floating Screed: For floating screeds, place a suitable separating or damp proof membrane over the insulation before applying the screed mortar. ARDEX A 38 MIX can be directly applied to concrete bases that are inadequately dry (above 75% RH), directly to ground, or areas subject to rising damp. However, it is recommended to use a damp proof membrane for projects with resilient floor finishes to protect against moisture from the substrate. For unbonded and floating screeds, install a damp proof/slip membrane as per BS 8204-1+A1 and BS 5385-3 before laying the screed. For bonded screeds, apply ARDEX DPM 1 C or ARDEX DPM 1 C R after 3 hours. If the concrete base has residual moisture below 95% RH, substitute with ARDEX MVS 95 after 4 hours.

Substrate Preparation for Screed Repairs

Repairs should be cut back to sound material, with cut edges treated using a bonding coat of ARDEX A 38 MIX mixed with ARDEX P 51 for dry, internal areas or ARDEX A 18 for external or wet areas. Compact ARDEX A 38 MIX into the bonding coat while it’s still wet.

Water Content

Add enough water to achieve a workable mix, up to a maximum of 1.75 liters per 25 kg bag. Do not exceed this amount to ensure rapid drying and strength development. The mix should have a normal screed consistency, retaining shape without crumbling when squeezed. Mixing should be done using forced action mixers, as free-fall mixers are not suitable.

Application

The working time of the mixed mortar is approximately 1 hour at 20°C, so mixing, placing, and finishing must be completed promptly. For new bays against hardened screeds, day work joints should be vertical and treated with the grouting slurry. Apply ARDEX A 38 MIX at temperatures above 5°C. For installations over underfloor heating systems, allow 3 days before heating the water to 25°C, maintaining this temperature for another 3 days, then increasing it for an additional 4 days while avoiding draughts.

Drying Time

ARDEX A 38 MIX can be walked on 3 hours after application, with ceramic and natural stone tiles able to be installed after 4 hours, regardless of thickness. Resilient floor coverings like carpet, vinyl, rubber, and wood can be installed after 2 days, and the screed will be fully dry after 48 hours.
