ARDEX AF 325 is perfectly suited for the installation of various textile floor coverings, including fiber-bonded, needle punch, latex and rubber foam-backed, hessian, polypropylene, nylon, “action-bac,” felt, and resin-backed carpets, as well as natural options like sea grass, hessian, and jute. This adhesive is compatible with ARDEX Latex and Water-Based Levelling and Smoothing Compounds, making it suitable for both commercial and residential applications. Additionally, ARDEX AF 325 is designed to accommodate chairs with castor wheels.
PRIMING
Priming is generally unnecessary; however, for highly absorbent surfaces, it can be beneficial to apply ARDEX P 51 Priming and Bonding Agent diluted 1:3 with cold, clean water. This will help maintain the working time and ensure optimal adhesive coverage.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The subfloor must include an effective damp proof membrane and maintain a dry condition with an equilibrium relative humidity of 75% or below. If there is no effective damp proof membrane or the relative humidity exceeds 75% RH, refer to the ARDEX Moisture Control brochure or contact ARDEX Technical Services for suitable product recommendations. The subfloor should be hard, clean, free from barrier materials, and sound, adhering to the relevant standards outlined in BS 5325 and BS 8204. Prior to applying ARDEX AF 325, all dust must be removed with appropriate vacuum equipment, as it can negatively affect adhesive coverage and performance. Any uneven areas should be leveled using the appropriate ARDEX Latex or Water-Based Levelling and Smoothing Compound, such as ARDITEX NA or ARDEX K 39. For repairs to the subfloor or stairs up to 50mm thick, ARDEX ARDURAPID A 45 Rapid Drying and Hardening Internal Repair Mortar can be utilized according to the product data sheet. Minor imperfections in plywood or existing leveling compounds can be smoothed and leveled before applying ARDEX AF 325, using ARDEX FEATHER FINISH in accordance with its product data sheet. Where necessary, fabricated underlays like flooring-grade plywood (SP101) should be installed over existing timber bases. These wood-based underlays must be compatible with the floor covering and have an equilibrium moisture content suitable for service conditions at the time of installation.
MIXING
ARDEX AF 325 is ready for immediate use, but for optimal performance, it is recommended to mix the adhesive thoroughly to ensure even dispersion of polymers before application.
APPLICATION
Maintain the installation area and subfloor at the appropriate temperature as specified by the floor covering manufacturer and the relevant sections of BS 5325. These temperatures should be sustained for 48 hours before installation, throughout the installation process, and for 48 hours afterward. ARDEX AF 325 should be applied evenly to the prepared substrate using a serrated trowel, held at an angle of approximately 60 degrees to maximize coverage and prevent pooling. Floor coverings can be applied directly into the wet adhesive on absorbent backgrounds immediately or after an airing time of 5-10 minutes, depending on ambient conditions. Allowing the adhesive to air will enhance initial grab. When using ARDEX AF 325, only apply enough adhesive that can be covered within the working time of 30 minutes on an absorbent subfloor. Regularly check for proper adhesive transfer to the back of the floor covering. Remove air pockets with a cork board or rubbing tool while the adhesive is still wet, then roll the floor covering using a 68kg roller. Some textile floor coverings may require additional rolling or smoothing about one hour after installation. When applying adhesive, avoid returning any surplus adhesive that has been spread across the subfloor back into the container. Instead, transfer it to a separate container for safe disposal to prevent contamination.
UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Underfloor heating systems should be commissioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions; if unavailable, follow the guidelines in BS 5325 and BS 8204. To manage thermal cycling of the subfloor, gradually raise the temperature of the substrate by approximately 5°C per day to reach full operating temperature, maintaining it for a designated period before slowly lowering it again. If moisture testing is necessary to verify the substrate’s relative humidity, switch off the underfloor heating system 48 hours prior to testing. After testing, or if moisture testing is not required, stabilize the heating system to room temperature, but not below 15°C, before floor covering installation. The substrate surface can then be repaired or smoothed with the appropriate ARDEX product and allowed to dry. Prior to installing the floor covering with ARDEX AF 325, allow it to acclimatize to the substrate temperature. After installation, maintain a constant temperature for at least 48 hours to allow the adhesive to cure properly before gradually increasing the temperature to the normal operating level.
APPLICATION – DOUBLE STICK METHOD
To secure the underlay, apply ARDEX AF 825 to a clean, prepared substrate using a medium-pile roller. Highly absorbent subfloors may require priming with ARDEX P 51 diluted 1 part primer to 3 parts water, applied to the subfloor and allowed to dry. Always adhere to the installation instructions provided by the underlay manufacturer. Once the underlay is secured, adhere the carpet using ARDEX AF 325 according to the carpet manufacturer’s installation instructions, employing the appropriate trowel serration, typically a B2.
