ARDEX AF 275 is specifically formulated for adhering rubber sheet and tile floorcoverings with a thickness of up to 4mm in dry interior environments. It is also compatible with chairs that have castor wheels.
PRIMING
Priming is generally unnecessary; however, for highly absorbent surfaces, it can be beneficial to apply ARDEX P 51 Priming and Bonding Agent diluted 1:3 with cold, clean water. This step helps maintain working time and ensures maximum adhesive coverage.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The subfloor must have an effective damp proof membrane and be dry, with an equilibrium relative humidity of 75% or below. If there is no damp proof membrane or if the humidity exceeds this limit, refer to the ARDEX Moisture Control brochure or contact ARDEX Technical Services for suitable product recommendations. The subfloor should be hard, clean, sound, and smooth, adhering to the relevant clauses of BS 8203 and BS 8204. Remove all dust using appropriate vacuum equipment before applying ARDEX AF 275, as dust can impact adhesive performance and coverage. Level any uneven subfloors with suitable ARDEX Latex or Water-Based Levelling and Smoothing Compounds, such as ARDITEX NA® or ARDEX K 40 FLOW. For repairs up to 50mm thick, use ARDURAPID A 45 Rapid Drying and Hardening Internal Repair Mortar. Any joints, nail holes, or minor surface imperfections can be pre-smoothed with ARDEX FEATHER FINISH before applying the adhesive. Where necessary, install fabricated underlays like flooring-grade plywood (SP101) over existing timber bases, ensuring they are suitable for the floorcovering and at the appropriate moisture content.
MIXING
ARDEX AF 275 is ready to use, but for optimal performance, thoroughly mix the adhesive to ensure even polymer dispersion before application.
APPLICATION
Maintain the installation area and subfloor at the temperatures specified by the floorcovering manufacturer, keeping these conditions for 48 hours before, during, and after installation. Apply ARDEX AF 275 evenly to the prepared substrate using the appropriate serrated trowel held at approximately a 60-degree angle to maximize coverage and prevent adhesive pooling. Allow the adhesive to air for 5 to 15 minutes to help reduce lateral slide and adhesive squeeze during the installation of rubber floorcoverings.
SEMI-WET BOND
Floorcoverings can be applied directly into the semi-wet adhesive on absorbent surfaces after airing. Check periodically for adhesive transfer to the back of the floorcovering, and cease work if transfer is insufficient. Remove any uncovered adhesive and clean the subfloor thoroughly. While the adhesive is still wet, eliminate air pockets using a cork board or rubbing tool, then roll the flooring with a 68kg roller. This rolling process will flatten serrations and minimize mirroring through thin resilient floorings as the adhesive dries. Some rubber floorcoverings may require additional rolling or smoothing after one hour. Heat welding should only begin once the adhesive has adequately dried. Avoid wet cleaning the floor immediately after installation; allow significant time for the adhesive bond to develop, typically 48 hours at 20°C. Dispose of any surplus adhesive safely, as returning it to the original container can lead to contamination issues.
UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Commission underfloor heating systems according to the manufacturer’s instructions; if unavailable, follow the guidance in BS 8203 and BS 8204. Gradually raise the substrate temperature by approximately 5°C per day to reach full operating temperature, maintaining it for a specified duration before gradually lowering it by the same rate to allow for shrinkage before installing the floorcovering. If moisture tests are required to assess substrate humidity, switch off the underfloor heating system for 48 hours prior to testing. After testing, stabilize the heating system to room temperature, but not below 15°C, before floorcovering installation. Repair or smooth the substrate surface with the appropriate ARDEX product and allow it to dry. Acclimatize the floorcovering to the substrate temperature before installation with ARDEX AF 275. After installation, maintain constant temperature for at least 48 hours for proper adhesive curing before gradually increasing the temperature to the normal operating level. Avoid placing any static or dynamic loads on the flooring, such as loaded trolleys or furniture, until the adhesive has fully set, which typically takes 48 hours at 20°C.
