ARDEX X 7 S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W are rapid-setting, flexible adhesives designed for wall and floor tiling applications. These adhesives are highly polymer-modified and feature S1 deformability, utilizing advanced fiber technology to enhance adhesion strength, grab, and non-slip properties. They offer an extended open and working time, accommodating larger mixes and application areas compared to standard rapid set adhesives. Notably, grouting can begin just three hours after installation. Classified to BS EN 12004 C2FES1 as “Improved fast-setting deformable cementitious adhesive with extended open time,” these products are suitable for both internal and external tiling.
Key Points:
- Rapid-Setting and Flexible: ARDEX X 7 S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W provide quick-setting capabilities while maintaining flexibility, making them ideal for a variety of tiling projects.
- Extended Working Time: With a longer open time than standard adhesives, these products allow for larger application areas and the ability to grout after just three hours.
- High Adhesion Strengths: The adhesives exhibit impressive tensile adhesion strengths, meeting or exceeding 0.5 N/mm² early adhesion and 1 N/mm² after various stress tests, ensuring durability for both internal and external applications, including swimming pools.
- Wide Compatibility: These adhesives bond effectively to a range of materials such as concrete, cement/sand renders, and tile backer boards, making them suitable for installations subject to limited movement and vibration.
Coverage
A 20kg bag of ARDEX X 7 R S1 or ARDEX X 7 R S1 W will produce approximately 14.3 liters of mortar, which covers around 4.7m² at a bed thickness of 3mm. The material requirement is roughly 1.4kg of powder per m² for each mm of thickness. Please note that actual coverage may vary based on the surface texture and flatness, as well as the trowel used.
Storage and Shelf Life
To ensure optimal performance, ARDEX X 7 R S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W should be stored in unopened packaging, elevated off the ground, in a cool, dry environment, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored properly, the shelf life is 12 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX X 7 R S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W are perfect for installing fully vitrified or porcelain tiles, along with other low porosity tiles such as glass mosaics, porcelain mosaics, terrazzo, ceramics, and natural stone (excluding translucent types) and brick slips. For moisture-sensitive natural stone and agglomerated stone tiles, it is advisable to use an ARDEX ‘RAPIDRY FORMULA’ adhesive, such as ARDEX S 27 W MICROTEC or ARDEX S 28 W Natural Stone Wall and Floor Tile Adhesives. These adhesives bond effectively to a variety of construction materials, including concrete, cement/sand renders, screeds, heated subfloors, brickwork, blockwork, properly primed calcium sulphate screeds, tile backer board, and plasterboard. They are suitable for installations that may experience limited movement and vibration, making them ideal for both internal and external applications, including swimming pools.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Before tile installation, the surfaces must be clean, firm, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other materials that could hinder adhesion. It is essential to allow adequate drying time for the substrate, as specified in the relevant sections of BS 5385, prior to fixing the tiles. The installation should comply with the applicable parts of BS 5385 and BS 8000: Part 11, which covers workmanship on building sites. Backgrounds for ceramic tiles should achieve Surface Regularity 1, ensuring that any gap under a 2m straight edge does not exceed 3mm. The substrate must be mature, stable, and robust enough to support the weight of the tiles being installed. While ARDEX X 7 R S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W can be applied to dry or slightly moist surfaces, it is crucial that moisture-sensitive materials remain dry after installation. To protect moisture-sensitive backgrounds in wet areas, the ARDEX WPC Waterproof Coating System can be applied prior to tiling to create a waterproof barrier that prevents water damage to floors and walls.
MIXING
To mix ARDEX X 7 R S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W, add the adhesive to clean water in a clean container while stirring. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a 10mm chuck and a variable speed electric drill makes mixing effortless. For a semi-pourable consistency, a 20kg bag of ARDEX X 7 R S1 or ARDEX X 7 R S1 W requires up to 5 litres of water for floor tiling. For a slump-free consistency suitable for wall, coving, or skirting tiling, use 4 to 4.25 litres of water. The consistency can be adjusted based on site conditions and the materials being used; however, it is important not to exceed the maximum recommended water amount per bag. The mixed mortar has a pot life of approximately 60 minutes at 20°C (45 minutes for the slump-free consistency).
APPLICATION
Apply the mixed mortar to the prepared surface using a trowel, then comb through it with a suitably sized notched trowel to create a straight ribbed adhesive bed. The size of the notched trowel should be selected based on the tile size, the surface being tiled, the profile on the back of the tile, and the required coverage. Tiles should be installed within the open time of the adhesive and pressed into place with a twisting and sliding action to ensure proper contact, as recommended in BS 5385. For wall tiling in dry internal locations, current British Standard Codes of Practice recommend maximizing the contact between the tile and adhesive. Tiles with a surface area less than 0.1 m² that exceed 70% of the background’s weight capacity should be solidly bedded. In wet areas such as showers and swimming pools, solid bed fixing is essential. For semi-pourable mixes, press the tile into place using a twisting and sliding motion, while with slump-free mixes, tiles typically need to be buttered immediately. ARDEX X 7 R S1 and ARDEX X 7 R S1 W have an open time of 30 minutes according to BS EN 12004: 2007 + A1: 2012, but for optimal performance, tiles should be fixed within 20 minutes. The mortar should be applied when temperatures are above 5°C.
GROUTING
Grouting can commence once the tile bed has sufficiently hardened to prevent dislodging the tiles, usually about 3 hours after application at 20°C. At this point, floor tiles can also tolerate light foot traffic. Note that higher temperatures will shorten this timeframe, while lower temperatures will extend it. For grouting tile joints, use the appropriate ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout: ARDEX-FLEX FL Rapid Setting Tile Grout for joints between 3-15mm wide and ARDEX-FLEX FS Flexible Tile Grout for joints up to 4mm wide. In areas requiring enhanced chemical resistance, superior hygiene, or reduced maintenance, ARDEX EG 18 PLUS Epoxide Tile Grout is recommended.
