Substrate Preparation
Surfaces must be sound, dry, clean, and free from dust, grease, or any barriers to adhesion. Remove any loose finishes. Priming is rarely needed; for absorbent surfaces, apply a scratch coat of ARDEX R 1, wait 30-60 minutes (at 18-20°C), then apply the final coat. Plaster substrates should be primed with ARDEX P 51, diluted 3:1 with water, applied with a brush, and left to dry. For acrylic paints and abraded tiles, use a thin scratch coat, allowing 30-60 minutes drying time before applying the second ARDEX R 1 coat. Old decorative finishes like ‘Artex’ can be smoothed directly with ARDEX R 1 without primer if they’re well-adhered; high spots should be smoothed with a steel float, and a scratch coat should be applied, allowed to dry, then followed by an additional layer to the required thickness.
Mixing
Add 2 parts ARDEX R 1 powder to 1 part clean water, mix thoroughly to achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency. Use a drill with a mixing paddle for larger batches; smaller amounts can be mixed by hand. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes to activate additives, then remix to a creamy consistency. The mixture has a 30-minute working time.
Application
For best results, apply ARDEX R 1 in two coats. Its rapid-drying properties enable complete wall smoothing in a single process. Use a trowel, blade, or filling knife, filling holes from the edges to prevent air bubbles. Wipe any imperfections with a damp sponge before drying to avoid sanding. Alternatively, smooth with a damp sponge and re-trowel or sand once hardened if desired. Apply at temperatures above 5°C.
Thicknesses and Drying Times
ARDEX R 1 can be applied up to 50mm thick in one layer and will fully dry in 24 hours. On absorbent surfaces, drying can take 6-8 hours, while on dense surfaces, it may take 24 hours. Decorative finishes like paint or wallpaper can be applied once dry, with times depending on ambient conditions and application thickness.
