ARDEX F 5 is suitable for both internal and external use, making it ideal for edge repairs, filling cavities, cracks, gaps, and holes. It is effective for patchwork and repairs on vertical and overhead surfaces and for smoothing internal walls and ceilings before applying paints, protective coats, renders, mineral render, silicone, varnish, and other finishes. Additionally, ARDEX F 5 is suitable for use on external facades and shop fronts.
Substrate Preparation
Priming is generally not required, but surfaces must be sound, dry, clean, and free from dust, grease, and barriers to adhesion. Use ARDEX Degreaser to remove oils, waxes, curing agents, or other obstacles to adhesion. Any loosely bonded surface coatings must be removed, and in-situ concrete should be at least 6 weeks old to ensure stability. ARDEX F 5 adheres directly to construction boards, concrete, cement/sand render, and gypsum-based plasters, though a scratch coat is recommended. Polyurethane, varnish coatings, loose renders, wallpapers, and weakly adhered paints must be fully removed.
Mixing
For a 25kg bag of ARDEX F 5, mix with approximately 12.5 liters of water (or 2.5 liters for a 5kg bag). Gradually add 2 parts powder to 1 part water while stirring, mixing until smooth and lump-free. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes, then remix to a creamy consistency. A drill with a mixing paddle is recommended for larger quantities. The product remains workable for around 30 minutes at 20°C.
Application
Apply ARDEX F 5 with a trowel, blade, or filling knife at thicknesses from feather edge up to 20mm, and up to 50mm for localized repairs. Gradually fill holes from the edges to avoid air bubbles. Ideal application temperature is around 20°C, with an open time of 30 minutes. Avoid sponge finishing, as this may compromise the surface. For larger cracks, combine with ARDEX Fine Aggregate at a ratio of 1 part powder to 0.3 parts sand, applying reinforcement mesh for very large cracks.
Drying Times
At 20°C, a 10mm application of ARDEX F 5 will dry in about 24 hours, ready for finishing such as paint or render. For thicker layers, drying takes 2-3 days. Note that ARDEX F 5 is water vapor-permeable, allowing for use in humid environments such as pool areas (where tiling is not required on walls or ceilings).
