ARBO EPDM BS1 Membrane System helps contractors achieve early waterproofing by sealing gaps between windows or curtain walls and the building’s internal structure. As building insurance standards and legislation increasingly require robust, multi-layered seals, relying solely on external sealants for water protection is no longer acceptable. The Arbo Membrane System provides a fully compatible solution, preventing water and air leakage while using safe, solvent-free sealants and adhesives. Tested extensively in laboratories, the system is compatible with sensitive substrates like natural stone and solvent-sensitive paint finishes. It also integrates seamlessly with other Arbo sealants that may come into contact with the EPDM membrane.

Key Points:

  1. The Arbo EPDM system enables early waterproofing by sealing gaps between windows or curtain walls and interior structures.
  2. Rising insurance standards and legislation require multi-layered seals, making external sealants alone insufficient for water protection.
  3. The Arbo Membrane System prevents water and air leakage with safe, solvent-free sealants and adhesives.
  4. The system is compatible with sensitive materials like natural stone, solvent-sensitive paint finishes, and other Arbo sealants.

ARBO EPDM BS1 Membrane System supports rapid construction methods, contractors require buildings to be made substantially waterproof as early as possible during the construction process. The Arbo EPDM system plays a crucial role in achieving this, with the membrane typically applied between the window or curtain wall and the exterior of the interior wall.

APPLICATION

Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, dry, and in sound condition before application. Ideally, the building should be protected to minimize dampness during construction. However, if components become damp, laboratory tests show that drying porous substrates (e.g., fiberboards) with a dry cloth and applying one coat of Arbo Primer 2650 can improve adhesion of ARBO MA. Arbo SA is not recommended for use on damp surfaces. Porous surfaces should always be primed with Arbo Primer 2650.

Laps and Priming

  • Minimum lap to window: 20 mm
  • Minimum lap to substrate: 100 mm
  • Terminator strips are recommended for deep laps at heads and sills.

Application Sequence
The recommended sequence for application is as follows:

  1. Cill
  2. Jambs
  3. Head

Application Process
Apply adhesive using a sealant gun, forming approximately 8 x 3 mm beads spaced 25 mm apart. Use an ARBO roller to press the membrane firmly onto the substrate, ensuring optimal contact.

Corners and Sealing
Corners should be lapped and patched as needed, and any holes or gaps should be sealed with additional adhesive. Edges of the membrane should also be over-sealed for added protection.

Curing and Temperature Considerations
The product cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture. Do not apply the product when surfaces are below 5°C, especially in damp conditions.

Additional Guidance
For further information on applying sealants and adhesives in cold weather, please visit the ARBO website or contact the technical department.
