EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 903 BITUMEN TROWEL MASTIC is a black, fibre-reinforced, bituminous compound that forms a surface skin while remaining soft underneath to allow for moderate movement. It is ideal for sealing and filling holes in mastic asphalt, roofing felt, corrugated iron, metal guttering, and downpipes. This fast-drying product is compatible with all bituminous surface coatings and remains flexible for long periods after application.

Black Jack 903 Bitumen Trowel Mastic is mainly used for waterproofing, sealing, bedding, bonding, and stopping. It adheres to and fills holes in various materials, including mastic asphalt, roofing felt, corrugated iron, cast iron, fibre cement, slates, lead, copper, zinc, concrete, and timber.
Surface Preparation:
Proper surface preparation is crucial for ensuring good adhesion and long-lasting results. All surfaces must be stable, clean, and dry. Metal surfaces should be wire brushed to remove rust, and rust-inhibitive treatments like red lead or zinc phosphate should be applied for long-term protection. Remove any loose or blistered paint. For new galvanized surfaces, use a wire brush to roughen the area or apply an etch primer. If the surface remains dusty or has weathered bitumen, prime it with BLACK JACK® BITUMEN PRIMER and allow it to dry. For cold weather applications, store the material in a warm room overnight.
Application:
EVERBUILD® BLACK JACK® 903 BITUMEN TROWEL MASTIC is ready to use and should not be thinned. Apply with a steel trowel or putty knife.
Cracks and Holes:
Force the compound into cracks and finish with a 25mm band at a 3mm thickness along the length of the crack. For large cracks and holes, apply the compound, embed a closely woven glass fibre membrane, and overlap the crack by 50mm. After drying, apply a second coat to cover the reinforcing membrane.
Corrugated Iron/Fibre Cement Sheeting:
Tighten loose hook bolts and trowel mastic around them. Remove and re-bed loose screws and washers with the mastic, then top-seal with more mastic and smooth it out. If the sheet is cracked, clean, prime with BLACK JACK® BITUMEN/FLASHING PRIMER, and apply a glass fibre bandage. Once dry, overcoat with BLACK JACK® BITUMEN/FLASHING PRIMER followed by BLACK JACK® BITUMEN PAINT. Use the same process for sealing side and end laps of corrugated sheeting.
Other Applications:
For tiles, fill the edges of ridge tiles, fillets, and slates with the mastic. For lead and zinc, trowel over cracks and pinholes, reinforcing with glass fibre if necessary. For felt, re-adhere loose areas with BLACK JACK® ROOF FELT ADHESIVE, then apply the mastic and overcoat with BLACK JACK® ALL WEATHER ROOF COATING. Ensure the felt is dry before applying the mastic.
Cleaning:
Clean tools with white spirit, and wipe off spills before the primer sets.
Limitations:
Do not use where solvent contact may occur afterward. Avoid inhaling vapours in confined spaces. Do not apply to damp surfaces, and allow sufficient drying time before overcoating. Only use black bituminous products for overpainting, as the mastic may bleed through other coatings.
