Data Sheets
EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. is a rubber-enriched bitumen emulsion designed to provide an effective damp proof membrane (DPM) for floors, as well as a waterproofer for walls, above-ground structures, and foundations. It also serves as an adhesive for wood block, mosaic panels, insulation boards, expanded polystyrene, cork, and a plaster bonding agent, even on difficult surfaces. This product forms an impervious water and water vapour barrier on most surfaces.
Key Points:
- Suitable for internal and external use.
- Acts as an adhesive and bonding aid.
- Low hazard and water cleanup.
- Low odour once cured.
Shelf life: 24 months from the date of manufacture when stored as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Storage conditions: Keep in the original container, in a cool (5°C to 25°C), dry place. Protect from frost.

EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. is commonly used for a variety of applications, including providing sandwich damp-proof membranes for floors and general waterproofing for materials like fibre/cement, render, and plaster. It is also effective for waterproofing structures such as bridge abutments, retaining walls, and culverts, as well as for fixing wood blocks, wooden mosaic flooring, and insulation boards like expanded polystyrene and cork slabs. Additionally, it serves as a bonding agent for plastering difficult surfaces, such as glazed tiles, and as a curing agent for concrete.
Substrate Preparation
Stir the product thoroughly before use. It is brown in color but will dry black. Ensure that surfaces are clean, free from excess water, dry to the touch, and sound. All contaminants that could affect adhesion must be removed. The base concrete must be finished with a wooden float to create a smooth surface, as tamped surfaces are unsuitable due to difficulties in achieving adequate coating on high spots. Prime porous surfaces with Everbuild® 503 SBR Bond, diluted 1:4 with water, and allow it to dry. All installation stages should follow BS Code of Practice 102: 1973 for protection of buildings from the ground/Section 3.
Application
Damp-Proofing Floors
Apply two coats by brush, with a minimum coverage of 0.8 L/m² per coat. Carry the treatment up the walls to meet the existing wall DPC. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat at right angles to the first. Once dry, apply a sand/cement or concrete screed of approximately 50 mm thickness over the EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. membrane.
Waterproofing Walls
For rising damp, the best treatment is the insertion of a damp-proof course. If the dampness is due to wall penetration, follow these steps:
a) Exterior walls: Level uneven surfaces with cement mortar. Apply three coats of EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. using a soft bristle brush, each at 0.5 L/m², ensuring each coat dries before the next is applied. Allow the final coat to become tacky, then blind it with clean, sharp sand.
b) Interior walls (moderately damp): Remove wallpaper, loose paint, and any dust or grease. Repair any damaged plaster. Lightly dampen the surface and apply three coats of EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. with a soft bristle brush, each at 0.5 L/m². Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Leave a 300 mm uncoated strip at the top of the wall to allow trapped moisture to escape by evaporation.
c) Interior walls (very damp): If possible, treat very damp walls externally (e.g., waterproof render or masonry paint). If external treatment isn’t feasible, remove old plaster, repair any brickwork or joint damage with cement mortar, and apply three coats of EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M., each at 0.5 L/m², ensuring each coat dries before the next. Once dry, replaster the wall.
Decorating
Gloss paints or other oil/alkyd-based paints should not be applied over surfaces treated with EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. When used over plaster, it is recommended to apply lining paper fixed with cellulose paste, which is suitable for emulsion paints or wallpapering.
Note: Do not apply vinyl-coated papers or paper-backed vinyls over EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M.
Waterproofing Structures
EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. creates a waterproof membrane on bridge abutments, retaining walls, culverts, and concrete or brick foundations. It can also serve as a curing membrane for green concrete. Ensure the surface is sound, free from dust, dirt, and grease. If the surface is hot, dry, or absorbent, dampen it with water. Apply two coats of EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. at 0.5 L/m² per coat.
Fixing Wood Blocks and Mosaics
For wood blocks (12 mm thickness or more), dip the bottom face of each block into the product and place immediately. Coverage is approximately 1.1 L/m². For wood mosaic panels, spread EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. on the surface at 0.8 L/m² and place the panels immediately. Allow at least 24 hours before sanding or traffic.
If underfloor heating is present, turn it off for at least 48 hours before and after tiling.
Note: On low-porosity or non-porous surfaces, allow the product to partially dry (30-40 minutes) before placing the wood blocks/mosaics, but do not allow it to dry completely. Do not install flooring over existing floor coverings.
Plaster/Render Bonding/Keying
For plastering onto glazed tiles, gloss-painted walls, or brick surfaces, or to bond sand/cement renders, apply two coats of EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. at 0.25 L/m² per coat. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second. Blind the second coat with clean, dry, sharp sand. Allow at least 48 hours before plastering or rendering (minimum 6 mm thickness).
Note: If gloss or alkyd paints are used as a decorative finish, the plaster over EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. must be at least 15 mm thick in two coats.
Fixing Insulation Board, Expanded Polystyrene, and Cork Slabs
Ensure surfaces are clean, level, and free from dust and loose debris. Apply a coat of EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M. to the porous base and place the insulation material while the product is still wet. If necessary, support the boards until the product sets.
Cleaning of Tools
Clean tools immediately after use with water. Once dried, the product can be removed with kerosene (paraffin) or white spirit.
Limitations
- Do not apply if rain is imminent. Protect from rain and frost until fully cured. The coating can be considered dry when rubbing with a wet finger does not leave a brown stain.
- Avoid use in areas where subsequent solvent contact is likely.
- Allow sufficient drying time between coats. Stir well before use.
- The product may bleed through paints applied over it. Apply a primer recommended by the paint manufacturer before overpainting.
- This product is not a replacement for a damp proof course (DPC) and should ideally be used alongside one.
- Gloss paints and other oil/alkyd-based paints must not be used directly over EVERBUILD BLACK JACK 908 D.P.M.
- It is unsuitable for use on concrete for waterproofing; use EN1504-3 certified products like Febtank Super instead.
