EVERBUILD 102 Butyl Glazing Compound is a hand-applied, semi-setting compound designed for bead or channel glazing where minimal structural or thermal movement occurs. It is ideal for both soft and hardwood frames and offers an elastic formulation that moves with the frame. Easier to apply than most competing putties, this compound has an extended shelf life, with added plasticizers that improve adhesion and help prevent cracking.

Key Points

  1. Semi-setting glazing compound for bead or channel glazing.
  2. Elastic formulation allows movement with the frame.
  3. Easier to apply compared to most other putties.
  4. Extended shelf life and plasticizer for improved adhesion and reduced cracking.

Shelf Life and Storage Conditions: The product has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Store between 5°C and 30°C. Note that the product may stiffen at lower temperatures.

Everbuild 102 Butyl Glazing Compound is suitable for use with laminated or heat-absorbing glass, bedding insulated glass units, and glazing both metal and timber greenhouses.

APPLICATION

Substrate Preparation:
Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, and other contaminants.

Priming:
Painted steel frames can be glazed without further preparation. Galvanized frames must be passivated or allowed to weather naturally. Check that primers (e.g., Calcium plumbate, zinc chromate) have hardened by wiping with white spirits. All timber frames and beading should be sealed with two coats of an impervious timber sealer to prevent oil/plasticizer migration, shrinkage, water ingress, and unit breakdown.

Application Method/Tools:
Glazing should follow the methods outlined in BS6262:2005 and BS8000-7:1990. Use impervious tape (e.g., aluminium) on double-glazed units before glazing to prevent reactions with edge sealants. Use setting blocks, distance pieces (minimum 3mm compound thickness), and ensure the channel around the glass is filled. For outside glazing, clean the rebates, beads, and seal with impervious timber sealer. Apply EVERBUILD® 102 Butyl Glazing Compound back bed, set the unit with blocks and distance pieces, and use EVERBUILD SILICONE 450 to seal the perimeter and form a bed between the bead and the glass. Fix beads and tool the sealant to ensure water shedding. Follow the same method for internal glazing but in reverse.

Overpainting and Maintenance:
Overpainting with oil-based undercoat and gloss can improve the product’s performance, though it is not always necessary. Regular maintenance and periodic checks for defects are essential for long-term performance.

LIMITATIONS
Not suitable for plastic frames or frames treated with decorative microporous stains. Mix the contents thoroughly to blend surface oil. Do not overpaint until a surface skin has formed (7-30 days). Avoid application below 4°C and do not use with metal casement putties for insulated glass units as it can lead to oil migration and poor performance.
