Feb Febond SBR is a styrene-butadiene co-polymer latex designed as a reliable water-resistant bonding agent and admixture for cementitious mixes. It enhances mortar and concrete by increasing water and abrasion resistance, tensile and flexural strength, and durability. Ideal for concrete repair, it reduces shrinkage, improves adhesion to various materials, and offers excellent resistance to frost, chemicals, and water-borne salts. Additionally, it provides enhanced corrosion protection and proven performance with thermal properties similar to concrete.

Key Points:

  1. Improves water resistance, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and flexural strength in mortar and concrete.
  2. Reduces shrinkage, prevents bleeding, and lowers the water-cement ratio for increased durability and toughness.
  3. Offers excellent adhesion to various materials, including steel, brick, glass, wood, and expanded polystyrene.
  4. Provides resistance to frost, chemicals, mineral oils, water-borne salts, and enhances corrosion protection.

Shelf Life: 12 months when stored under normal conditions at temperatures between 5°C and 20°C.
Storage Conditions: Stir before use and protect from frost. Freezing can permanently damage Feb Febond SBR, especially if it is thawed too quickly.

Feb Febond SBR is versatile and suitable for various applications, including concrete repair, floor screeds and toppings, external rendering, waterproofing and tanking, fixing brick slips and tiles, corrosion protection of steel, and lining and protecting silage pits.

APPLICATION

Substrate Preparation

Ensure all surfaces are clean, sound, and free of contaminants before applying Feb® Febond® SBR mixes. For damaged concrete, cut back to solid material and create a minimum 6mm deep saw-cut edge to avoid feathering.

Bonding Slurry

Dampen absorbent surfaces like concrete and brick until they are surface-dry. Prepare a bonding slurry using 1.5 parts OPC to 1 part Feb® Febond® SBR by volume. Apply the slurry with a stiff brush, ensuring complete coverage. A single coat should be 0.3–0.5mm thick, avoiding excess thickness. Apply additional coats at right angles if needed and avoid applying more slurry than can be screeded or rendered within 15 minutes.

Mixing

Use a forced-action mixer, such as a Crete angle, for mixing. For mixes under 25kg, hand batching is acceptable. Pre-mix sand and cement for one minute, then add Feb® Febond® SBR and mix for 30 seconds to minimize air entrainment. Gradually add water until the desired consistency is achieved. Do not exceed a total mixing time of two minutes, and avoid adding excessive water as it may cause rapid thinning due to the plasticizing properties of Feb® Febond® SBR.

Application Method / Tools

  • Rendering Vertical Surfaces: Apply bonding slurry to the prepared surface and render while still wet or tacky (within 15 minutes). Apply Feb® Febond® SBR mortars in layers up to 6mm thick to avoid slumping, allowing rapid successive applications within 15–30 minutes. Thicker coats may require formwork. Smooth with a float or trowel. Alternatively, scratch the first coat, let it dry overnight, and apply a second coat. For low drying rates, a slurry coat can be added before the second coat.
  • Screeds and Toppings for Horizontal Surfaces: Apply the modified mix over a wet bonding slurry, compact, and level it. Trowel to the desired finish. For screeds over existing concrete, ensure expansion joints are carried through the Feb® Febond® SBR layer using a timber batten wrapped in polythene.

Curing and After-Treatment

Moisture-cure the modified mix for at least one day, then allow it to dry slowly. This ensures proper hydration of the cement and allows the latex particles to form continuous films and strands, enhancing durability.
