This adhesive is suitable for interior and exterior wall and floor applications, including swimming pools, pool surrounds, shower blocks, kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, balconies, terraces, commercial spaces, offices, and public buildings. It can be used for installing various tile types, such as porous-bodied wall tiles, vitrified and porcelain mosaics, natural stone tiles (not prone to discoloration or moisture), quarry tiles, and brick slips. Compatible substrates include gypsum plaster, plasterboard, cement-based and proprietary tile backer boards, cement:sand render, well-adhered paint, concrete, cement:sand screeds, and properly prepared calcium sulfate-based screeds. It is also suitable for use with both hot water and electrical underfloor heating systems.
However, this adhesive is not suitable for installing synthetic stone or natural stone prone to staining. It should also not be used on floorboards or chipboard.
Application Procedure
Substrate Preparation
For floors, concrete substrates must be at least 6 weeks old, and cement:sand screeds should cure for a minimum of 3 weeks before tiling. Calcium sulphate screeds must be abraded to remove surface laitance, primed with Mapei Plaster Primer, and have a moisture content below 0.5% w/w. All substrates must be flat, firm, dry, and free from cracks or contaminants like dust, grease, and paint. When overlaying timber bases, use a minimum 10 mm moisture-stable board, such as a cement-based tile backer board. For plywood fixed to joists, a minimum of 15 mm thickness and screw fixing at 300 mm centers is required. Underfloor heating systems should be commissioned before tiling, with cement:sand screeds cured for at least 3 weeks before gradually raising the temperature. Balconies should have a waterproof membrane before tiling.
For walls, plaster must dry for at least 4 weeks before priming, or 1 week for plaster skim coats over plasterboard. Cement:sand renders require a 2-week curing period. Shiny plaster walls may need light sanding before priming. The maximum tile weight for plaster is 20 kg/m², while plasterboard can hold up to 32 kg/m². Painted surfaces must be firmly bonded, with loose paint removed. In shower areas, apply a waterproof coating before tiling, avoiding bitumen-based membranes.
Product Preparation & Application
For mixing, add 5.4-5.8 liters of clean water (for white adhesive) or 4.8-5.2 liters (for grey) per 20 kg bag while stirring with a slow-speed mechanical mixer for 2-3 minutes until lump-free. For smaller batches, use approximately 1 part water to 3.5 parts powder.
Apply the adhesive using a notched trowel, ensuring a minimum 65% tile coverage for dry interior walls and 100% for wet areas, floors, and exteriors. Press tiles into place before the adhesive skins over, using a twisting action for full contact. Only spread as much adhesive as can be tiled within 30 minutes. Use the white version for light-colored stone, testing compatibility in a small trial area first.
Grouting & Movement Joints
Tiles can be grouted once the adhesive has dried, typically after 24 hours, though drying time may be extended in colder conditions or with non-porous substrates. Use Mapei Flexible Wall & Floor Grout or Mapei Anti-Mould Flexible Coloured Grout. Incorporate movement joints per BS 5385 guidelines to allow for substrate expansion and contraction, using an appropriate sealant or pre-formed joint section.
