SikaCeram-277 Flexible Standard Set is a versatile, standard-setting thin-bed adhesive ideal for both wall and floor tiles. Its long working pot-life and extended open time make it particularly suitable for applications where extensive cutting is needed during installation. This adhesive is designed for fixing a wide range of tiles, including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, mosaics, and vitrified tiles, with the white version especially recommended for light-colored natural stones like marble and travertine. It also offers resistance to slight movement and stress, making it perfect for areas exposed to frequent wet conditions or full water immersion.

Key Points:

  • Versatile Application – Suitable for ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, mosaics, and vitrified tiles.
  • Extended Open Time – Remains workable for up to 4 hours, depending on the substrate and temperature.
  • Ideal for Extensive Cutting – Perfect for applications where cutting is required during installation.
  • Water Resistance – Suitable for areas frequently exposed to water or full immersion.

Coverage: Approximately 4 kg per m² when applied as directed.

Shelf Life: 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored as directed.

Storage Conditions: Store in unopened bags, off the ground, in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive drafts. Using this product after the recommended storage period may increase the risk of an allergic reaction.

Sikaceram-277 is suitable for use with underfloor heating, as well as on concrete, sand/cement screeds, tile backer boards, cement-faced fibre boards, plaster, and plasterboard. It can be applied both internally and externally on walls and floors.

Application

Substrate Quality / Pre-Treatment:
All surfaces must be clean, firm, and free of dust, dirt, oil, and loose coatings. Ensure surfaces are structurally sound and capable of withstanding expected traffic loads. Worn or porous substrates should be primed with SikaBond  SBR+. For rough or uneven surfaces like tamp-rutted concrete and masonry, use a suitable Sikafloor Self Levelling Compound, allowing it to cure for 24-48 hours before applying adhesive. Fresh concrete should be left to dry for at least 4 weeks, and floors must be free from rising damp. Prime with SikaBond SBR+ diluted (3 parts water to 1 part SBR) and allow to dry. For timber floors, ensure adequate ventilation and cover with moisture-resistant exterior grade plywood (min 12 mm thick), secured with screws at 300 mm centers. For existing tiles, ensure they are securely bonded and roughen glazed surfaces before applying a bonding coat of neat SikaBond SBR+. For gypsum plaster or anhydrite floors, prime with two coats of SikaBond SBR+, the first coat diluted 1:1 and the second neat.

Mixing:
Mix SikaCeram-277 Flexible Standard Set with clean water in a ratio of 1 part water to 3 parts powder by volume (20 kg powder to 5 L of clean water). Mix to a slump-free mortar, ensuring no additional water is added once the adhesive begins to set, as it will compromise bond strength.

Application:
Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dust and loose material. Use a notched trowel to apply the adhesive, creating a ribbed mortar bed. Firmly bed the tiles using a twist and slide action for full contact. The following notches are recommended:

  • 3 mm x 3 mm at 6 mm centers for mosaics and thin flat-backed tiles.
  • 5 mm x 5 mm at 10 mm centers for general wall tiling.
  • 10 mm x 10 mm at 16 mm centers for general floor tiling.
SikaCeram-277 will remain workable for up to 4 hours, depending on substrate absorbency and temperature. Periodically check the adhesive and reapply if a skin forms. Ensure that at least 75% of the tile is covered with adhesive. Remove excess adhesive while still wet using a damp cloth or sponge, especially along grout lines. Grouting can begin once the tile bed is firm, typically after 24 hours at room temperature (longer in cold conditions). For fully set adhesive, use SikaCeram CleanGrout to grout the joints.

Subfloor Heating:
When installing over a heated subfloor, allow the adhesive to cure for 2-3 weeks before turning on the heating. Gradually increase the temperature by 2°C per day until reaching the required operating temperature.

Cleaning of Tools:
Clean tools in water immediately after use. Wash hands promptly after handling the product.

Limitations:
Always mix SikaCeram-277 Flexible Standard Set with clean, fresh water and prime or bond surfaces as instructed. Never exceed the recommended water quantity, as this will weaken the adhesive and cause failure. Avoid mixing the adhesive when temperatures are forecast to be below 5˚C or above 35˚C within the first 24 hours after application. Do not apply to damp surfaces or when the ambient temperature is consistently below 15˚C, as this will significantly extend drying time. Only mix as much adhesive as can be applied within 4 hours, and never attempt to reconstitute the product once it has set. Ensure floors are properly prepared and free of movement before tiling. Existing concrete subfloors must be a minimum of 4 weeks old. SikaCeram-277 cannot be used directly on unsealed gypsum plaster (refer to application instructions for priming) or painted surfaces—remove paint before application. Do not use on metal surfaces, and avoid walking on floors until the adhesive is fully set (approximately 24 hours). For floors with underfloor heating, turn off the heating 24 hours before and after application. If applying externally, protect from rain for at least 24 hours, and do not apply when rain is imminent. It is not recommended for use on tongue-and-groove timber floorboards or floating plywood floors. Always clean off any adhesive residue from the tile surface before it sets. As the manufacturer cannot foresee every possible application, it is the user’s responsibility to ensure the product is suitable for the intended use. If in doubt, consult the Technical Services Department.
