ARDEX A 828 is a brilliant white, rapid-hardening gypsum-based plaster designed for filling, smoothing, and finishing interior walls and ceilings. It serves as an ideal base for paint and wallpaper finishes and can be used as a high-build plaster for filling and repairs, with slump-free properties that allow for easy application in a single step, even at thicker layers. This versatile plaster adheres well to a variety of substrates, including plasterboard, pre-rendered walls, concrete backgrounds, aerated concrete, lightweight blocks, construction boards, and over old, sound decorative finishes. Additionally, ARDEX A 828 can be utilized as a lightweight adhesive for non-structural lightweight blocks, for filling large static cracks and deep holes, and for smoothing raw masonry or insulation boards, among other applications. Its extra-fine formulation enables a feather edge for a high-quality finish, while its tension-free, non-shrink properties ensure a hard, crack-free surface resistant to wallpaper adhesives and various paints.

Substrate Preparation: Before applying ARDEX A 828, ensure that surfaces are rigid, dry, clean, and free from dust, grease, and any barriers to adhesion. The product adheres well to absorbent construction boards and cement or gypsum-based plasters. Most absorbent surfaces do not require priming, although a scratch coat is recommended. For smooth concrete, apply ARDEX P 51 Concentrated Water-Based Primer and Bonding Agent, diluted at a ratio of 3 parts water to 1 part primer, using a brush, and allow to dry. Other smooth surfaces, such as varnished finishes and oil-based paints, may require priming with ARDEX P 82 Water-Based Epoxy Primer or ARDEX P 4 Ready Mixed Rapid Drying Multi-Purpose Primer. Always use compatible primers, and conduct a trial application if uncertain.
Mixing: To mix ARDEX A 828, gradually add 2 parts powder to 1 part clean water while stirring until a lump-free consistency is reached. It is recommended to use a drill with an appropriate mixing paddle for larger volumes, though hand mixing is acceptable for small amounts. Let the mixture stand for 2-3 minutes to allow high-performance additives to dissolve before remixing to a smooth, creamy texture. The working time for the mixed product is approximately 30 minutes.
Application: ARDEX A 828’s unique hardening properties allow for the smoothing and finishing of entire walls in a single application, eliminating the need for multiple stages typical of traditional gypsum-based plasters. Due to its slump-free formulation, there is no risk of plaster rolling off during application. Use a trowel, blade, or filling knife to apply the product, filling holes gradually from the edges to prevent air bubbles. Any imperfections can be smoothed out with a damp sponge before drying, minimizing the need for sanding later. If desired, once hardened, the surface can be sanded or an additional coat may be applied. Ensure that the application temperature is above 5°C.
Drying Times and Subsequent Treatment: The surface must be allowed to dry before applying decorative finishes like paint or wallpaper. Drying times will vary based on ambient conditions and layer thickness; at 20°C, a 1-2mm layer dries in about 1 hour, while a 10mm layer will be surface dry in approximately 5-6 hours. For smoothing old decorative finishes such as ‘ARTEX’, ensure the surface is sound and well-adhered. Remove high spots with a steel float, then prime with ARDEX P 51 diluted as before, and allow it to dry. After applying a scratch coat of mixed ARDEX A 828 to fill the structured finish, allow it to dry before adding an additional layer to the desired thickness, smoothing it while still fresh. Imperfections should be addressed with a damp sponge before drying to avoid the need for sanding.
