ARDEX A 46 is a fast-setting, slump-free mortar designed for both external and internal repairs. This polymer-modified mortar quickly sets and hardens, providing a high-performance repair that is strong and durable. Ideal for non-structural concrete repairs, ARDEX A 46 is perfect for filling cracks, gaps, and holes, and for resurfacing damaged concrete surfaces. It can also be used for repairs on concrete stairtreads, risers, brickwork (excluding lightweight concrete), wall renders, and more. Additionally, it can form ramps, coves, and repair soffits, beams, and lintels. ARDEX A 46 can even be used as a wearing surface in areas with light foot traffic.
Key Points:
- Rapid Setting and High Performance: ARDEX A 46 sets and hardens quickly, providing a strong and durable repair suitable for both internal and external applications.
- Versatile Repair Applications: It is ideal for repairing and resurfacing concrete surfaces, including filling cracks, gaps, and holes, and fixing damaged stairtreads, brickwork, and wall renders.
- Flexible Usage: ARDEX A 46 can be used to form ramps and coves, and it is also effective for repairs around pipework, door and window frames, as well as soffits, beams, and lintels.
- Wearing Surface Capability: It can be used as a wearing surface in lightly trafficked areas, making it a versatile choice for various repair needs.
Note: When using ARDEX A 46 with aggregate-filled mortars, apply a neat layer of ARDEX A 46 as a bonding coat while the previous layer is still fresh.
Coverage
One 11kg bag of ARDEX A 46 covers approximately 4 square meters at a thickness of 2mm, while a 5kg bag covers about 1.8 square meters at the same thickness. The coverage rate is approximately 1.4kg of powder per square meter for each millimeter of thickness. An 11kg bag produces about 8 liters of mortar, and a 5kg bag yields roughly 3.6 liters.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store ARDEX A 46 in its original, unopened packaging, off the ground, in a cool, dry place, and away from excessive drafts. Do not use the product after the expiration date indicated on the packaging. If stored properly, ARDEX A 46 should be used within 6 months of the date on the packaging.

ARDEX A46 is perfect for quickly repairing and resurfacing concrete surfaces. It is intended for non-structural repairs only. Here are some of its key uses:
- Filling Cracks and Holes: Ideal for repairing cracks, gaps, and holes in concrete.
- Repairing Concrete Surfaces: Suitable for refacing concrete stairtreads, risers, and damaged brickwork (excluding lightweight concrete).
- Wall and Floor Repairs: Effective for fixing damaged wall renders, wall chases, and patching cracks in walls and floors.
- Forming Ramps and Coving: Can be used to create ramps (2mm to 30mm thick) and coves for floors.
- Repairing Structural Elements: Useful for repairing soffits, beams, and lintels.
ARDEX A46 can also serve as a wearing surface in lightly trafficked areas. Note: When working with aggregate-filled mortars, apply a fresh layer of ARDEX A46 as a bonding coat on the wet mortar to ensure proper adhesion.
Preparation
ARDEX A46 can be applied to dry or damp concrete, render, screeds, and similar cement-based surfaces, provided they are solid, sound, and free from dust, grease, oil, and other substances that may prevent adhesion. Typically, priming is not needed on concrete, cement/sand screeds, or brickwork unless the surface is extremely porous. For highly absorbent surfaces, first apply a thin, firm layer of the mortar (known as a scratch coat) to ensure good adhesion before applying the final layer to the desired thickness. Worn or trafficked areas should be mechanically cleaned to remove contaminants and expose a clean surface for better adhesion.
Mixing
To mix ARDEX A46, add the powder to the required amount of clean water in a clean container and mix thoroughly until a slump-free mortar is achieved. The recommended mix ratio is approximately 3 parts powder to 1 part water by volume. For instance, use 5kg of ARDEX A46 powder with 1.2 to 1.4 liters of water, or 11kg of powder with 2.7 to 3 liters of water. Avoid using excessive water. The mixed mortar remains workable for 15 to 20 minutes at 20°C, with the working time extending in cooler conditions and reducing in warmer temperatures.
Application
ARDEX A46 can be applied in thicknesses ranging from 2mm to 30mm. For small repairs up to 50mm thick, you can bulk out the mortar with up to 1/3 volume of sharp sand (0-5mm grading) or an equal volume of ARDEX Coarse Aggregate or 3mm single-sized aggregate/chippings. For repairs exceeding 20mm, such as deep holes and cracks, incorporate up to an equal volume of 10mm single-sized coarse aggregate into the mortar. ARDEX A46 is moisture-tolerant and frost-resistant, making it ideal for patch repairs before applying a suitable ARDEX Damp Proof Membrane. Apply ARDEX A46 only when the temperature is above 5°C.
Repairs
Apply the mortar with a trowel to holes, cracks, and damaged areas, ensuring it adheres well by pressing it into the surface. Leave the repair slightly proud. After about 10 minutes at 20°C, or when the mortar is firm enough, trim excess material and smooth the surface with a wet trowel, sponge, or sponge float. This smoothing should be completed within 15 minutes of application. Once the ARDEX A46 repair has hardened, you can level the surface if needed with an appropriate ARDEX Levelling and Smoothing Compound.
Smoothing and Refacing
Apply the mixed mortar with a trowel to the required thickness, considering the working time. Finish with a wet trowel after 10 to 15 minutes at 20°C to prepare the surface for tile or stone application. Protect the finished surface from direct sunlight and drafts to prevent rapid drying. Additional levelling compounds and moisture-tolerant finishes, such as ceramic tiles, can be applied in as little as 4 hours under optimal conditions (20°C).
