PRIMING
Priming is typically unnecessary, but on highly absorbent surfaces, applying ARDEX P 51 Priming and Bonding Agent diluted 1:3 with cold water can help extend the adhesive’s working time and maximize coverage.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
Ensure the subfloor has an effective damp proof membrane and is dry, with relative humidity not exceeding 75%. If absent or above this limit, refer to the ARDEX Moisture Control brochure or consult ARDEX Technical Support for appropriate product guidance. The subfloor should be hard, clean, free of barrier materials, sound, and smooth, adhering to BS 8203 and BS 8204 standards. Remove any dust using a vacuum before applying ARDEX AF 148, as dust impacts coverage and adhesive performance. Use ARDEX Levelling Compounds on uneven floors, and ARDEX ARDURAPID A 45 for repairs up to 50mm in thickness. Joints, minor damage, and plywood imperfections can be pre-smoothed with ARDEX FEATHER FINISH. When necessary, install flooring-grade plywood (SP101) over timber bases, ensuring the underlay is at its service moisture level.
UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Follow the heating manufacturer’s instructions for commissioning underfloor heating, or refer to BS 8203 and BS 8204 if unspecified. Gradually cycle the temperature of the substrate, raising it by 5°C per day to full operating temperature, and then reducing it in the same manner. This process allows any shrinkage to occur before floorcovering installation. For moisture testing, turn off the heating system 48 hours prior; once testing is complete, stabilize room temperature to at least 15°C. Allow the floorcovering to acclimatize before installation and maintain a stable temperature for 48 hours post-installation for proper adhesive curing. Avoid heavy traffic on the floor until the adhesive has fully set, typically 48 hours at 20°C.
MIXING
ARDEX AF 148 is ready for immediate use; however, for optimal performance, thoroughly mix the adhesive to ensure even dispersion of polymers.
APPLICATION
Ensure the installation area and subfloor are kept at the recommended temperature per the floorcovering manufacturer’s guidelines and BS 8203, maintaining these conditions 48 hours before, during, and 48 hours after installation. Use a serrated trowel at a 60-degree angle to apply ARDEX AF 148 evenly across the subfloor, avoiding adhesive pooling. Allow 30-45 minutes for the adhesive to reach full tack, depending on substrate absorbency and ambient conditions. For optimal results, position the floorcovering within 180 minutes, ensuring proper alignment. Roll the floorcovering with a 68kg roller, from side to side, then end to end, to secure full adhesive contact. Avoid contaminating applied adhesive if installation is delayed, and dispose of any surplus adhesive in a separate container to prevent contamination.
