Priming and Substrate Preparation
Priming is generally unnecessary, but for highly absorbent surfaces, using ARDEX P 51 Priming and Bonding Agent diluted 1:3 with cold, clean water can enhance adhesive performance by extending working time and ensuring optimal coverage. The subfloor must include an effective damp proof membrane, be dry, and maintain a relative humidity of 75% or lower. If these conditions aren’t met, consult the ARDEX Moisture Control brochure or Technical Services for guidance. The subfloor should be hard, clean, free from debris, and smooth, adhering to BS 8203 and BS 8204 standards. Any dust must be vacuumed away before applying ARDEX AF 785, as it can affect adhesion. Uneven surfaces should be levelled using appropriate ARDEX products, and repairs can be made with ARDEX ARDURAPID A 45. Minor imperfections may be pre-smoothed with ARDEX FEATHER FINISH, and wood-based underlays must match the moisture content suitable for the intended flooring.
Mixing and Application
ARDEX AF 785 is ready for immediate use but should be mixed thoroughly for optimal performance. Maintain the installation area’s temperature according to the flooring manufacturer’s recommendations for 48 hours before, during, and after installation. Apply the adhesive evenly using a serrated trowel held at a 60-degree angle to maximize coverage. After a 5-10 minute airing period, floorcoverings can be placed directly into the wet adhesive. Only apply enough adhesive to cover within the working time of about 10 minutes, checking for full transfer to the flooring material. Remove air pockets and ensure good contact using a 68kg roller, allowing time for the adhesive bond to develop before any wet cleaning, typically waiting 48 hours at 20°C.
Underfloor Heating Considerations
For underfloor heating, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for commissioning, and if unavailable, adhere to the guidance in BS 8203 and BS 8204. Gradually raise the subfloor temperature by 5°C daily to reach full operating temperature, then lower it slowly before installing the flooring. If moisture testing is needed, turn off the heating system 48 hours prior to testing. After any necessary repairs and acclimatization of the flooring material, allow the adhesive to cure for at least 48 hours before returning to normal operating temperatures and avoiding any load on the flooring until the adhesive is fully set.
