ARDEX AF 835 is a water-based, solvent-free, and extremely low-odour acrylic emulsion tackifier designed for floorcoverings. This product is odourless when dry, offers a short airing time, and provides permanent tack while being resistant to biodegradation and plasticiser migration. It meets the stringent emission limits set by the EMICODE licence ‘EC1 PLUS’, ensuring minimal environmental impact. ARDEX AF 835 is ideal for securing carpet tiles with bitumen, felt, fleece, and PVC/PUR backings and can also function as a release adhesive for carpet underlays using the “double stick” method in conjunction with ARDEX AF 325 Carpet Adhesive. Additionally, it is compatible with all ARDEX latex or water-based levelling and smoothing compounds, making it suitable for both commercial and domestic settings, including areas with castor-wheeled furniture.

ARDEX AF 835 is specifically formulated for securing carpet tiles with various backings, including bitumen, felt, fleece, and PVC/PUR. Additionally, it serves as a release adhesive for carpet underlays when employing the “double stick” method with ARDEX AF 325 Carpet Adhesive for broadloom carpets. This versatile product is compatible with all ARDEX Latex or water-based levelling and smoothing compounds, making it suitable for both commercial and residential applications. Moreover, ARDEX AF 835 is also appropriate for use with chairs equipped with castor wheels.
PRIMING
Priming is not necessary; however, on highly absorbent surfaces, using ARDEX P 51 Priming and Bonding Agent diluted 1:3 with cold, clean water can be beneficial. This approach helps maintain working time and ensures optimal adhesive coverage.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The subfloor must include an effective damp proof membrane and be dry, with an equilibrium relative humidity of 75% or below. In cases where no damp proof membrane exists or the relative humidity exceeds 75% RH, refer to the ARDEX Moisture Control brochure or consult ARDEX Technical Services for appropriate product selection. The subfloor should be hard, clean, free from barrier materials, sound, and smooth, conforming to the relevant sections of BS 5325 and BS 8204. Remove any dust using suitable vacuum equipment before applying ARDEX AF 835, as it can impact adhesive performance and coverage. Level any uneven subfloors with the appropriate ARDEX Latex or Water-Based Levelling and Smoothing Compound, such as ARDITEX NA or ARDEX K 39. For subfloor or stair repairs up to 50mm thick, use ARDEX ARDURAPID A 45 Rapid Drying and Hardening Internal Repair Mortar as per the product data sheet. When necessary, install fabricated underlays like flooring-grade plywood (SP101) over existing timber bases. Ensure wood-based underlays are suitable for the floor covering and maintain the equilibrium moisture content expected during service.
MIXING
ARDEX AF 835 is ready to use, but for optimal performance, it should be thoroughly mixed to ensure even polymer dispersion prior to application.
APPLICATION
On non-absorbent surfaces, ARDEX AF 835 has an airing time of approximately 35 minutes, which is reduced to about 20 minutes on absorbent surfaces. Once dry, the adhesive remains workable for up to 24 hours. Maintain the installation area and subfloor at the appropriate temperature specified by the floor covering manufacturer and outlined in BS 5325. These temperature conditions must be sustained for 48 hours before, during, and after installation. Apply ARDEX AF 835 evenly to the prepared substrate using a short to medium pile or foam roller, allowing it to dry to a transparent film before placing any floor coverings or carpet underlays. Placing textiles or underlays onto wet adhesive will create a permanent bond that cannot be removed. Remove any air pockets with a cork board or rubbing tool while the adhesive is still wet, and roll the floor covering with a 68 kg roller and/or a smoothing tool as needed. After installing the floor covering or carpet underlay, you can repeatedly remove and replace it while the adhesive remains tacky. Be cautious to avoid dust contamination of the adhesive bed when removing floor coverings.
APPLICATION – DOUBLE STICK METHOD
To secure the underlay, apply ARDEX AF 835 to a clean, prepared substrate using a medium pile roller. Highly absorbent subfloors may require priming with ARDEX P 51 diluted at a ratio of 1 part primer to 3 parts water; allow this to dry before proceeding. Always adhere to the underlay manufacturer’s installation instructions. Once the underlay is secured, apply ARDEX AF 835 to adhere the carpet, following the carpet manufacturer’s installation guidelines and using the appropriate trowel serration, typically a B1. When applying ARDEX AF 835 to raised access floors, avoid getting adhesive between the joints of individual panels. If necessary, seal the joints between raised access panels with masking tape prior to applying the adhesive. Ensure any excess adhesive moved across the subfloor is not returned to the original container, but instead placed in a separate container for safe disposal to prevent contamination.
UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Commission underfloor heating systems according to the manufacturer’s instructions; if unavailable, follow the guidance in BS 5325 and BS 8204. To address thermal cycling, gradually raise the substrate temperature, typically by 5°C per day, to reach full operating temperature, hold for a defined period, and then lower it back down at the same rate. If moisture testing is required, turn off the underfloor heating system for 48 hours before testing. If moisture testing is not necessary or after testing, stabilize the heating system to room temperature (not below 15°C) prior to floor covering installation. Repair or smooth the substrate with the appropriate ARDEX product and allow it to dry. Acclimatize the floor covering to the substrate temperature before installation with ARDEX AF 835. After installation, maintain a constant temperature for at least 48 hours to ensure proper adhesive curing before gradually increasing to the normal operating temperature.
