ARDEX D 20 is a versatile adhesive designed for fixing ceramic tiles and mosaics to a variety of surfaces, including gypsum plaster, paper-faced plasterboards, concrete, cement and sand renders, and stable cement-based sheets and boards. It is also effective for adhering porous tiles to existing ceramic tiling. This adhesive is suitable for application in dry internal environments and is ideal for use in domestic showers and bathrooms, provided there is adequate time for the tiles to dry thoroughly between uses.
Preparation: Ensure the substrate is sound, fully cured, dry, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and any other contaminants that could impair adhesion. Use an appropriate degreaser to remove any oil, wax, or grease. Remove paint coatings, whitewash, and other friable materials.
Application: Apply ARDEX D 20 adhesive to the wall using a trowel, pressing the adhesive into the surface and spreading it evenly. Then, use a notched trowel to comb the adhesive into a ribbed pattern, creating a uniform bed for the tiles. For porcelain tiles larger than 150mm x 150mm or porous-backed tiles greater than 300mm x 300mm, use a suitable ARDEX cement-based adhesive. Ensure that one or both surfaces being adhered are porous and absorbent; for non-porous tiles on non-absorbent backgrounds, choose an appropriate ARDEX cement-based adhesive. Apply only enough adhesive to cover an area that can be tiled within 20 minutes, depending on substrate absorbency and site conditions. The high initial grab of ARDEX D 20 generally negates the need for battens and spacers. In intermittently wet areas, regularly check adhesive coverage to ensure a solid bed and butter the tile back if necessary.
Coverage Note: Maximum tiling weight per square meter is 20kg for gypsum plaster and 32kg for plasterboard. New plasterwork should be allowed to dry for at least 4 weeks. Ensure the plaster surface is clean, sound, and free of dust; remove any smooth, shiny, or dusty finish by wire brushing. Render must air dry for at least 2 weeks before tiling. In frequently wet areas like showers, treat the surface with ARDEX WPC Rapid Setting Waterproof Coating before tiling, and use ARDEX X 7 or X 77 adhesives. For permanently wet locations, such as swimming pools, use ARDEX X 77 MICROTEC Flexible Wall and Floor Tile Adhesive.
Grouting: Wait at least 24 hours after fixing the tiles before grouting. Use an appropriate ARDEX–FLEX cement-based grout for general tiling. For impervious or non-porous backgrounds, allow up to 3 days before grouting. Incorporate movement joints as per BS 5385-1 guidelines, including over existing or structural movement joints, where tiling meets other materials, across junctions of different materials, at internal vertical corners, and at 3m to 4.5m centers both horizontally and vertically, as well as in areas prone to stress, such as changes in alignment.
