ARDEX FA 20 is a high-performance, fiber-reinforced compound designed for smoothing and leveling uneven floors. Using advanced MICROTEC technology, it quickly prepares new and existing surfaces for floor finishes. This versatile compound can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including timber floors, flooring-grade asphalt, and substrates with adhesive residues. Once applied, ARDEX FA 20 typically sets in about two hours at a temperature of 20°C, allowing for faster project completion.
ARDEX FA 20 can level and smooth uneven, dry internal subfloors in just one application. It’s ideal for use on surfaces like concrete, screeds, timber, chipboard, and even ceramic or porcelain tiles. Additionally, it can be applied over well-adhered, non-water-soluble adhesive residues, making it suitable for a range of projects.
Key Points:
- Fast-setting and efficient: ARDEX FA 20 levels and smooths surfaces in a single application, typically ready to walk on within 2 hours at 20°C.
- Versatile surface compatibility: It works on a wide range of subfloors, including concrete, screeds, timber, flooring-grade asphalt, and chipboard.
- MICROTEC technology: This advanced technology ensures a strong, durable finish, making it an ideal choice for preparing surfaces before applying floor finishes.
- Suitable for existing floors: ARDEX FA 20 can be applied over floors with adhesive residues, as well as ceramic or porcelain tiles, ensuring smoothness without the need for extensive removal work.
Coverage
You will need about 1.4kg of ARDEX FA 20 powder per square meter for each millimeter of thickness. For example, one bag will cover around 5 square meters at a thickness of 3mm. Keep in mind that this estimate is for flat, level surfaces. If the surface is rough or uneven, you may need more material.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store ARDEX FA 20 in its original, unopened packaging, off the ground, in a cool, dry place, and protect it from strong drafts. When stored properly, the product has a shelf life of 6 months from the date printed on the packaging.

ARDEX FA 20 is designed to level and smooth uneven, dry internal subfloors in just one application. It works on a variety of surfaces, including concrete, cement/sand screeds, anhydrite screeds, flooring-grade asphalt, timber, and non-moisture-resistant chipboard. It can also be applied over ceramic or porcelain tiles, as well as surfaces with well-adhered, non-water-soluble adhesive residues.
Surface Preparation
Before applying ARDEX FA 20, ensure that the surface is solid, clean, and free from dust, dirt, paint, lime coatings, plaster, and excessive adhesive residues. Use a degreaser to remove any polish, wax, grease, or oil. For concrete surfaces, remove laitance. If a damp-proof membrane (DPM) is needed for direct-to-earth subfloors, ensure it is intact. If the DPM is missing or damaged, or if residual moisture is present, refer to the ARDEX DPM 1 C, ARDEX DPM 1 C R, or ARDEX MVS 95 datasheets, or contact our Technical Services Department for guidance.
Priming is usually not needed for concrete and cement/sand screeds, but very absorbent subfloors may require ARDEX P 51 Primer to prevent air bubbles and maintain the flow of ARDEX FA 20. Gypsum-based subfloors must be dry and primed with ARDEX P 51 Primer diluted 1:3. ARDEX FA 20 can be applied on flooring-grade asphalt if it is hard and sound, with a maximum thickness of 10mm. Clean and prime asphalt with ARDEX P 82 Primer. For existing substrates with adhesive residues, ensure they are load-bearing and not water-soluble. Use ARDEX P 82 Water Dispersed Epoxy Primer for residues from polyurethane, epoxy, or bitumen. Unglazed ceramic tiles only need cleaning, while glazed or smooth tiles require mechanical preparation or priming with ARDEX P 82 or ARDEX P 4 Ready Mixed Primer. Wooden substrates should be dry, rigidly fixed, and primed with ARDEX P 82 or undiluted ARDEX P 51 Primer. For timber floors, it is also recommended to use a 4mm x 4mm fiberglass mesh before applying ARDEX FA 20. Floating timber floors are not suitable for rigid finishes like ceramic tiles.
Mixing
Mix up to 5.5 liters of water per 20kg bag of ARDEX FA 20. Add the powder to the water in a clean container, stirring thoroughly until you achieve a lump-free consistency. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a slow-speed electric drill (600-1000 rpm) makes mixing easier. Apply the mixed ARDEX FA 20 within 30 minutes at 20°C. This time may vary with temperature: it extends in cooler conditions and shortens in warmer ones.
Application
Pour the mixed ARDEX FA 20 onto the prepared subfloor to the desired thickness in one application. Smooth with a finishing float or steel trowel. For best results, apply the compound perpendicular to continuous joints in substrates like floorboards or chipboard. For applications over underfloor heating, ensure the system has been commissioned according to BS 8204 Part 1 and is turned down to 15°C before applying ARDEX FA 20. Gradually recommission the heating to avoid thermal shock.
Thickness
The standard mix of ARDEX FA 20 is suitable for thicknesses from 3mm to 10mm. For layers between 10mm and 20mm, mix in up to a third volume of ARDEX Coarse Aggregate. If a smoothing layer is needed over a thick application, it should be applied once the surface is walkable. If the ARDEX FA 20 has dried, prime with ARDEX P 51 Primer diluted 1:3 before adding a new layer.
Drying and Hardening
ARDEX FA 20 dries quickly. Levels up to 10mm are ready for floor coverings after 24 hours at 20°C. Thicker layers require about 2 days to dry. ARDEX FA 20 is not suitable for external use or in permanently wet areas.
