Sourced from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, UK, it is a key component in ARDEX subfloor smoothing compounds and epoxy primers. This versatile aggregate creates a “sandpaper” finish when used for blinding ARDEX R3E, R5E, R6E, and PSRS and ensures strong adhesion when paired with ARDEX epoxy primers and smoothing compounds. For optimal performance, it should be stored in unopened packaging in a cool, dry place, off the ground.

ARDEX Fine Aggregate is a dry, washed, and graded silica sand designed for fully blinding epoxy primers and ARDEX subfloor smoothing compounds, creating a textured “sandpaper” finish for improved adhesion.
ARDEX Fine Aggregate is used as a “sand blind” to create a roughened, textured surface on wet epoxy primers such as ARDEX R 3E. The aggregate is applied to the fresh primer, fully covering it, and any excess is removed after the primer sets. This process leaves a “sandpaper” finish that enhances adhesion for subsequent layers like smoothing compounds or tile adhesives.
Preparation
- Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and properly prepared before applying the epoxy primer.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific ARDEX epoxy primer being used.
Application
- Apply ARDEX Fine Aggregate directly onto the wet epoxy primer while it is still fresh.
- Ensure complete and even coverage of the primer with the dry aggregate.
Purpose
- The aggregate creates a mechanical key or roughened surface to improve bonding with subsequent layers, such as smoothing compounds or tile adhesives.
Removal of Excess
- Once the epoxy primer has set, brush or vacuum away any excess aggregate to reveal a uniform “sandpaper” finish.
