Preparation
Ensure that tiles are securely fixed and the joints are clean, free of dust, excess adhesive, bedding mortar, or other debris.
Mix Proportions
The mix ratio is approximately 1 part water to 4 parts ARDEX-FLEX FL powder by volume. For a 10kg bag, use about 2 litres of water; for a 5kg bag, use 1 litre of water; and for a 2.5kg bag, use 0.5 litres of water.
Mixing
Gradually add ARDEX-FLEX FL powder to the measured water in a clean container, stirring thoroughly until a smooth, creamy mortar is achieved. For wider wall tile joints (over 10mm), adjust to a thicker consistency. The mixed grout has a working time of about 30 minutes at 20°C, with higher temperatures reducing and lower temperatures extending the working time.
Application
Apply the grout using a rubber squeegee or rubber-backed trowel, ensuring all joints are fully filled. Remove excess grout as you work. Wipe any residue from the tile surface with a damp sponge within 30 minutes of application. If left longer, lightly moisten the surface to ease removal. A fine mist spray can help emulsify grout residue. Once the grout hardens in the joints, any dry film on the tile surface can be polished off with a dry cloth. Ensure application is above 5°C.
Note
Certain ceramic, vitrified, porcelain, and natural stone tiles, especially those with textured, matt-glazed, or porous surfaces, may be prone to surface discolouration during grouting. Conduct a trial application to check for potential discolouration. For water-sensitive natural stone, consider using ARDEX MG Rapid Drying Marble and Natural Stone Grout. When using intense grout colours, apply a protective treatment to the tile surface to prevent grout retention in the tile’s pores or texture. Refer to BS 5385-1: 2018 (clause 7.3.3) for further guidance on coloured grout application. For additional advice, consult the tile manufacturer or distributor.
