ARDEX K 55 FAST is a cutting-edge subfloor smoothing compound formulated for rapid hardening, ideal for projects that require minimal installation time for floor finishes. When mixed with water, it creates an exceptionally fluid, self-levelling mortar that can be applied in a single operation, ranging from a feather edge to a maximum thickness of 10 mm. Depending on the substrate and application thickness, the surface can typically be walked on within approximately 30 minutes at 20°C. Once sufficiently hardened, floor coverings can be installed as soon as 60 minutes later for applications less than 3 mm thick, with the appropriate adhesive recommended for such reduced thicknesses. Notably, after installation, the floor should not endure heavy or moving loads for at least 48 hours.

Key Points

  1. Rapid Hardening: ARDEX K 55 FAST allows for quick installation, typically walkable within 30 minutes and ready for floor covering in as little as 60 minutes for applications under 3 mm thick.
  2. Single Application: It is designed to level and smooth subfloors in one application, effectively addressing issues with uneven or damaged concrete, adjusting floor tolerances, and renovating old subfloors before new coverings.
  3. Fluid Self-Levelling: The compound produces a fluid, self-levelling mortar that can be applied from a feather edge up to 10 mm thickness in a single operation.
  4. Load Limitations: Post-installation, it is crucial to avoid heavy or moving loads on the newly applied surface for at least 48 hours to ensure proper curing and stability.

Coverage: The coverage is approximately 1.62 kg of powder per square metre for each millimetre of thickness, meaning that one bag can cover about 6.2 m² at a thickness of 2 mm.

Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX K 55 FAST should be stored in its original unopened packaging, kept off the ground in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored properly, the shelf life of this product is 6 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX K 55 FAST effectively levels and smooths surfaces in a single application within a 10-minute working time. It is ideal for addressing uneven or damaged in-situ concrete subfloors, correcting tolerances or camber issues between floors, slabs, or pre-cast concrete, and preparing old subfloors and screeds in renovation projects before laying resilient floor coverings like vinyl and carpet. However, ARDEX K 55 FAST is not intended to be used as a wearing surface.

Substrate Preparation

Note: ARDEX K 55 FAST is not suitable for asphalt subfloors and is intended for internal use only. Direct-to-ground subfloors must be dry and protected by a damp proof membrane (DPM). The surface to be smoothed should be hard, sound, and free from dust, dirt, and other contaminants such as paint, lime coatings, plaster, and adhesive residues. Use an appropriate degreasing agent to remove polish, wax, grease, and oil. Mechanical preparation methods should be employed to eliminate any barriers to adhesion, including surface laitance on concrete. For direct-to-earth subfloors, an effective damp proof membrane like ARDEX DPM 1 C is required. When preparing and priming anhydrite or gypsum screeds before installing ARDEX K 55 FAST, refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations for priming. For further assistance, contact our Technical Services Department. High-performance smoothing compounds like ARDEX K 55 FAST need a well-prepared, sound subfloor. Since adhesive residues can vary in their ability to support smoothing compounds, do not apply ARDEX K 55 FAST over any old adhesive residues. All surfaces must be primed: use ARDEX P 82 Primer for smooth, non-absorbent subfloors (e.g., ceramic tiles and dense surfaces), and ARDEX P 51 Primer for very porous surfaces to prevent air bubbles from affecting the compound’s flow properties. Refer to the relevant technical datasheet for dilution ratios and application methods. ARDEX P 51 can also be used for correctly prepared anhydrite/gypsum screeds, although a sand-blinded coat of a moisture-tolerant epoxy primer such as ARDEX R 3 E may be necessary, depending on the gypsum screed manufacturer’s guidelines.

It is crucial not to exceed 4.2 liters of water per 20 kg bag. Mixing is easier with an ARDEX mixing paddle and a slow-speed electric drill (600-1000 rpm). ARDEX K 55 FAST should be applied within 10 minutes of mixing at 20°C, with time extending at lower temperatures and decreasing at higher temperatures. Due to its fast-setting nature, apply the material immediately after mixing to maintain a wet edge when joining mixes. For lone workers, it is advisable to pre-measure the mixing water to minimize mixing times. If a spiked roller is used during application, this should occur while the material is still fluid, well within the 10-minute working time.

Application: Pour the mixed ARDEX K 55 FAST onto the prepared subfloor, allowing it to flow out and create a flat surface within the 10-minute working time. A steel finishing float or a long-handled smoothing trowel is recommended for the desired finish, and a spiked roller can be used for immediate finishing. Apply at temperatures above 5°C.

Applications over Underfloor Heating: When installing over heated screeds, follow BS 8204 Part 1 and BS EN 1264. The underfloor heating system must be commissioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the aforementioned standards. After commissioning and thermal cycling, the system should be turned down to room temperature, but not below 15°C, before installing ARDEX K 55 FAST and the floorcovering. Gradually increase the underfloor heating system to normal operating temperature to prevent rapid thermal shock and temperature variations.
