ARDEX K 80 is a specially designed cement-based compound ideal for resurfacing and leveling existing concrete floors, providing a hard, smooth, and flat surface suitable for various paint and resin coatings. This product works seamlessly with the ARDEX SD-T B base mix, which pre-levels concrete surfaces before applying ARDEX K 80. Featuring the innovative ARDEX “Rapidry Formula,” this industrial floor system combines toughness, low maintenance, ease of application, and high durability. The unique formula allows ARDEX K 80 to chemically bind the mixed water, enabling it to dry rapidly while simultaneously developing strength. It produces a fluid self-leveling mortar that can be applied by trowel or pump at thicknesses ranging from 5mm to 10mm, making it an efficient solution for heavy-duty applications in industrial settings.

Key Points

  1. Versatile Application: ARDEX K 80 is suitable for resurfacing and leveling concrete floors, providing a smooth and durable surface for coatings.
  2. Rapid Drying Technology: The “Rapidry Formula” enables quick drying and strength development, allowing for efficient project timelines.
  3. Self-Leveling Properties: It can be applied in thicknesses from 5mm to 10mm using a trowel or pump, ensuring a flat finish.
  4. Heavy-Duty Performance: Designed to withstand heavy wheeled traffic, ARDEX K 80 offers excellent abrasion resistance, making it ideal for industrial environments.

Coverage: ARDEX K 80 powder provides coverage of approximately 1.65 kg per m² per mm of thickness. For instance, a 25 kg bag will cover about 3.0 m² at a thickness of 5 mm. Please note that this coverage estimate is based on a flat, level surface; additional material may be required for rough or uneven areas.

Storage and Shelf Life: To maintain its quality, ARDEX K 80 should be stored in unopened packaging, off the ground, in a cool, dry environment, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored under these conditions, the shelf life is 12 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX K 80 is suitable for withstanding heavy wheeled traffic and boasts excellent abrasion resistance. Creates wearing surfaces ideal for commercial and industrial environments. Can be installed at thicknesses ranging from 5 mm to 50 mm over existing concrete surfaces. Compatible with a variety of surface finishes, including suitable resin coatings, tiles, and natural stone, and can be hand mixed or pump applied.

Substrate Preparation

The concrete surface must be hard, sound, and free of dust and barrier materials such as paint, lime coatings, plaster, curing agents, laitance, and adhesive residues that could hinder adhesion. The concrete should have sufficient strength to support ARDEX K 80, with BS8204-3 recommending a minimum surface tensile strength of 0.8 N/mm² for bases receiving wearing or levelling screeds. For heavy-duty locations or when applying a resin coating, a minimum tensile strength of 1.5 N/mm² is advisable. Use an appropriate degreaser to remove contaminants like polish, wax, grease, and oil before mechanical preparation.

Concrete surfaces must be mechanically prepared through scabbling, grinding, or contained shot blasting, and should be vacuumed clean prior to priming. All surfaces need to be primed, ideally with a sand-blinded application of ARDEX R 3 E Solvent Free Epoxy Primer or ARDEX R 5 E Rapid Curing Solvent Free Epoxy Primer, following the technical data sheet. The sand for blinding should be ARDEX Fine Aggregate, approximately 1 to 1.5 mm in size. Overwatered or weak concrete must be prepared down to solid material using mechanical methods. Direct-to-earth concrete sub-floors must be dry and equipped with an effective damp proof membrane, such as ARDEX DPM 1 C.

When applying ARDEX K 80 on top of ARDEX SD-T B base mix, ensure any contamination is removed prior to priming with ARDEX P 51 primer mixed at a ratio of 1:2 with water. The surface of the ARDEX SD-T B base mix should be thoroughly primed, with the primer allowed to dry before applying ARDEX K 80. Note that any joints or cracks in the concrete base where movement is anticipated should be carried through to the finished surface. ARDEX K 80 is not suitable for external use or areas exposed to moisture.

Mixing ARDEX K 80

To prepare ARDEX K 80, add the appropriate amount of clean water to a clean mixing container and gradually incorporate the powder while mixing thoroughly with an ARDEX mixing paddle attached to a variable-speed electric drill (600-1,000 rpm) until a smooth, lump-free mortar is achieved. For each 25 kg bag, use 4.75 to 5 litres of clean water, avoiding more than 5 litres per bag and using the minimum amount for thick applications or colder conditions.

Application of ARDEX K 80

Pour the mixed ARDEX K 80 onto the prepared sub-floor. The mortar will flow and self-level during the first 10 minutes of its 30-minute working time at 20°C. Use an ARDEX Pin Leveller for thicker applications, and a spiked roller for finishing, depending on the desired surface finish. The minimum application temperature is 10°C. For large sub-floors requiring levelling or thick applications, consider pumping the ARDEX K 80/SD-T B Industrial Floor System; see the separate ARDEX SD-T B data sheet for guidance. Note that ARDEX K 80/SD-T B can be pumped using appropriate floor screed mixer pump units; contact our Technical Support Team for advice on equipment and techniques.
