ARDEX P4 Primer is a ready-to-use, fast-drying, and drip-free primer that is solvent-free and designed for a wide range of applications. It can be used on both indoor and outdoor surfaces like walls, floors, and ceilings. This primer has a special formula that prevents dripping and splashing, making it easy to apply, even on ceilings. ARDEX P4 Primer is typically applied before using ARDEX tile adhesives or leveling compounds, and it creates a rough surface that helps tiles stick better, especially on smooth surfaces where adhesives might otherwise slip.

It’s ideal for areas that may get damp or wet, like kitchens, bathrooms, and porches. If your surface needs a moisture barrier, ARDEX provides a separate product called ARDEX DPM1C for that purpose. This primer works well on a variety of surfaces, including concrete, screeds, tiles, terrazzo, and more, making it very versatile.

Key Points:

  1. Ready-to-use and drip-free: ARDEX P4 Primer is a fast-drying, pre-mixed primer designed to prevent dripping and splashes, making it easy to apply on ceilings and walls without mess.
  2. Strong adhesive grip: The primer creates a textured surface that improves adhesion, making it ideal for applying tiles over smooth surfaces without the risk of slipping.
  3. Versatile and weather-resistant: Suitable for both internal and external areas, it works in damp spaces like bathrooms, kitchens, and porches.
  4. Works on multiple surfaces: ARDEX P4 Primer can be applied on a wide range of surfaces including concrete, ceramic tiles, terrazzo, screeds, and even traces of old non-water-soluble adhesives.

Coverage
An 8kg tub of ARDEX P4 Primer (used without dilution) should cover at least 40 square meters on most standard surfaces. The maximum coverage is 50 square meters per tub. The exact coverage depends on the surface; smooth surfaces like ceramic tiles will need less primer than more porous surfaces like screeds.

Storage and Shelf Life
ARDEX P4 Primer can be stored for up to 12 months in its original, unopened container.

ARDEX P4 Primer is suitable for use on both indoor and outdoor walls, ceilings, and floors. Its formula is designed to prevent dripping and splashing, making it easy to apply. It should be used before installing ARDEX tile adhesives or floor leveling compounds. The primer creates a rough surface that helps tiles stick better, especially when applying tiles over smooth surfaces, reducing the chance of adhesive slipping.

This primer is ideal for areas that may get damp or wet, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and porches. If a damp-proof membrane is needed, refer to the ARDEX DPM1C datasheet. ARDEX P4 Primer can be applied to various surfaces, including:

  • Concrete
  • Cement and lime renders
  • Sand/cement screeds
  • Ceramic tiles and slabs
  • Terrazzo
  • Dispersion-based paints
  • Traces of non-water-soluble flooring adhesives
  • Dry screeds
  • Leveling and smoothing compounds
  • ARDEX Damp Proof Membranes

Surface Preparation
Before applying ARDEX P4 Primer, make sure the surface is solid, clean, and free of dust, dirt, water-soluble materials, or excess adhesive. Any polish, wax, or grease should be removed with a degreaser before mechanical preparation. If you’re using the primer with moisture-sensitive materials, the surface must be dry with a Relative Humidity (RH) of 75% or lower. If needed, use a damp-proof membrane like ARDEX DPM 1C to protect the surface.

Apply ARDEX P4 Primer to ARDEX DPM 1C within 36 hours of curing, or within 8 hours for ARDEX DPM 1C R. ARDEX P4 Primer can also be used under ARDEX leveling compounds on internal concrete, and it works well for outdoor use under ARDEX K 301 Exterior Self-Smoothing and Resurfacing Compound.

Application
ARDEX P4 Primer comes pre-mixed and is ready to use. Apply a thin, even coat using a short-pile roller or paintbrush. Make sure to cover the surface so that once it dries, the primer forms a solid white film (not translucent). Allow the primer to dry fully before applying tile or flooring products. The drying time varies based on temperature and the surface, usually taking 30 to 60 minutes at 20°C. Warmer temperatures or absorbent surfaces will speed up drying, while colder temperatures or dense surfaces may slow it down.

Once dry, there’s no time limit for applying the next layer, but it’s best to do so promptly to avoid contamination or damage. After use, reseal the container to prevent evaporation and contamination. For absorbent surfaces, you can dilute the primer by adding up to ¼ liter of water for a 2kg tub or 1 liter for an 8kg tub. Make sure the temperature of the surface is at least 5°C and rising when applying the primer.
