ARDEX PSRS is a solvent-free, two-component epoxy resin with ultra-low viscosity, specifically designed for strengthening and restoring poorly compacted and low-strength screeds that fail to meet the required in-situ crushing resistance value. This product effectively penetrates defective screeds, filling voids created by inadequate compaction and consolidating loose particles. Once cured, the resin-filled substrate delivers a high-strength screed that achieves the highest soundness category as defined in BS 8204-1 for in-situ crushing resistance. ARDEX PSRS is particularly beneficial in biologically sensitive areas where removing the screed could adversely affect the surrounding environment.

Key Points:

  1. Composition: ARDEX PSRS is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin with ultra-low viscosity.
  2. Function: It strengthens and restores poorly compacted screeds by filling voids and consolidating loose particles.
  3. Performance: The cured substrate achieves high strength, meeting the highest soundness category in BS 8204-1 for in-situ crushing resistance.
  4. Environmental Consideration: Ideal for use in biologically sensitive areas where screed removal may harm the environment.

Coverage: The amount of ARDEX PSRS required will vary based on the porosity and depth of the screed. For instance, a weak cement/sand screed that is 50mm thick and has a BS 8204-1 in-situ crushing resistance test value of 8mm typically needs between 3kg and 5kg of ARDEX PSRS per square meter. Note that areas of the same screed that are stronger, denser, or more thoroughly compacted will require less resin.

Storage and Shelf Life: Store ARDEX PSRS in a dry environment. It has a shelf life of up to 12 months when kept in the original, unopened containers at temperatures above 10°C.

ARDEX PSRS infiltrates the defective screed, filling voids caused by inadequate compaction and stabilizing loose particles.

Substrate Preparation

To prepare the substrate, remove any existing floor coverings along with any smoothing or leveling underlayment to expose the underlying cement/sand screed. Depending on the screed’s condition, use appropriate mechanized equipment such as a scabbling or planing machine, followed by surface grinding, to ensure that the weak screed is fully exposed. It’s crucial to thoroughly vacuum the surface to eliminate dust, as this can hinder the penetration of ARDEX PSRS. For any required full-depth repairs, refer to the ARDEX A 38 or ARDEX A 38 MIX datasheets for guidance. Keep in mind that lower temperatures will increase the viscosity of ARDEX PSRS, reducing its ability to penetrate the screed and compromising performance. Therefore, aim for a subfloor temperature above 15°C, and avoid using it below 10°C. Condition the ARDEX PSRS resin packs at 15-25°C for 24 hours prior to application. Note that ARDEX PSRS will not penetrate a water-saturated screed. If saturation is present, consult the ARDEX Technical Services Department for advice. Additionally, ensure that the screed remains stable under damp conditions, as rapid drying and gypsum-based screeds may not be stable in wet environments. For damp cement/sand screeds, ARDEX DPM 1 C may be applied after consolidating with ARDEX PSRS. In such cases, the un-sanded, cured ARDEX PSRS must be abraded to remove surface contaminants before applying ARDEX DPM 1 C directly, following the guidance provided in its datasheet. For heated screeds, ensure the heating is turned off 48 hours before and after applying ARDEX PSRS. Movement joints should not be filled with resin; instead, use a suitable impervious joint filler.

Mixing

The components of ARDEX PSRS come pre-gauged in their original containers, maintaining the correct mixing ratio of 2.52:1. To mix, add the hardening agent (Component B) to the resin (Component A) and use a spiral mixing paddle with a slow-speed drill to achieve a uniform consistency. It’s essential to mix all components thoroughly. Pour a portion of the mixed product back into the hardener container to ensure that any remaining hardener is incorporated and that the resin can cure properly, thus allowing for safe disposal of any leftover material. After this step, return the proportion back to the main mix and stir again.

Application

Once mixed, ARDEX PSRS should be poured onto the prepared screed and spread using a squeegee, ensuring constant movement to promote even penetration. Continue applying the product until no further resin is absorbed. Finally, scatter ARDEX FINE AGGREGATE over the surface to create a “sandpaper” texture, providing a mechanical key for subsequent application of the appropriate ARDEX smoothing compound. Allow the product to cure. Alternatively, after a minimum curing period of four hours, the surface can be abraded and thoroughly cleaned before applying one coat of ARDEX R 3 E Epoxy Primer and sand blinding. ARDEX PSRS has a working time of 20 minutes at 20°C; this duration is shortened at higher temperatures and lengthened at lower ones. Avoid excessively high temperatures (above 25°C) to maintain working time. It’s recommended to pour and spread ARDEX PSRS immediately after mixing to counteract the exothermic reaction that generates heat and reduces working time. To verify the screed has reached the required strength, testing can be conducted after 24 hours using an ISCR tester.
