ARDEX R 5 E Rapid Curing Solvent Free Epoxy Primer and Bonding Agent is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin designed for application on sound concrete, cementitious surfaces, calcium sulfate-based screeds, and smoothing compounds. This product is ideal for situations where faster curing times are essential, as it creates a primer or bonding layer on most dry substrates, particularly on smooth or dense surfaces, both indoors and outdoors. It serves as a primer and bonding bridge for the ARDEX range of cement-based tiling and flooring products and must be sand-blinded with dry ARDEX Fine Aggregate to ensure a mechanical key for use with the ARDEX K 80/SD-TB/PC-T4 Industrial Floor System and other suitable ARDEX products. In cases of highly porous substrates, multiple coats of ARDEX R 5 E may be necessary to fully saturate the surface and achieve optimal bonding. For applications where the substrate’s relative humidity exceeds 75% or lacks a structural damp proof membrane, it is recommended to use ARDEX DPM 1 C prior to applying ARDEX R 5 E.
Key Points:
- Composition: ARDEX R 5 E is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin suitable for various surfaces, including concrete and calcium sulfate screeds.
- Fast Curing: Designed for applications requiring quicker curing times, it creates a bonding layer on dry substrates in both internal and external environments.
- Mechanical Keying: The product must be sand-blinded with dry ARDEX Fine Aggregate to ensure proper adhesion for subsequent ARDEX cement-based products.
- Humidity Considerations: When relative humidity exceeds 75% or a structural damp proof membrane is absent, ARDEX DPM 1 C should be used before applying ARDEX R 5 E.
Coverage: Each 6kg unit covers approximately 24m².
Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX R 5 E Solvent Free Epoxy Primer has a shelf life of at least 12 months when stored in its original, unopened containers.

ARDEX R 5 E is ideal for applications requiring a quick curing time, as it creates a primer and bonding layer on various dry substrates, particularly smooth or dense surfaces in both internal and external environments. It serves as a primer and bonding bridge for the ARDEX range of cement-based tiling and flooring products, as well as for cementitious and calcium sulphate-based screeds. To ensure effective bonding, ARDEX R 5 E must be sand blinded with dry ARDEX Fine Aggregate to create a mechanical key before applying systems like the ARDEX K 80/SD-TB/PC-T4 Industrial Floor System or other suitable ARDEX cement-based products and smoothing compounds. In cases of very porous substrates, multiple coats of ARDEX R 5 E may be necessary to fully saturate the surface and achieve optimal bonding performance. If the relative humidity (RH) of the substrate exceeds 75% or if a structural damp proof membrane is absent, it is recommended to use ARDEX DPM 1 C prior to the application of ARDEX R 5 E.
Surface Preparation: Before application, the concrete or screed substrate must be hard, sound, and free of dust and other barrier materials, including paint, lime coatings, plaster, curing agents, laitance, and adhesive residues, which could hinder adhesion. A suitable degreaser should be used to eliminate contaminants such as polish, wax, grease, and oil prior to mechanical preparation. All substrates should be treated with appropriate mechanical surface preparation equipment, followed by thorough cleaning using brushing and effective industrial vacuum extraction to remove dust and fine particles. The mechanical preparation must be sufficient to expose the aggregate and create a solid surface ready for treatment. Additionally, any joints or cracks in the concrete that are subject to differential movement, such as movement joints, should be extended to the finished surface and sealed appropriately.
Mixing: Before mixing, thoroughly stir the individual components of ARDEX R 5 E Solvent Free Epoxy Primer. Pour the entire contents of the hardener (Component B) into the resin container (Component A) and mix well for at least three minutes using a heavy-duty slow-speed drill with a spiral paddle. To ensure no residue remains, reintroduce some of the mixed material back into the hardener container, then pour it back into the main mixing vessel and mix for an additional 30 seconds (back mixing). This process prevents unreacted material and allows for safe disposal of packaging as non-hazardous waste. The mixed primer has a working time of no more than 15 minutes at 20°C, after which any leftover material should be discarded safely. Note that once mixed, ARDEX R 5 E will generate heat and reduce working time if left in the mixing container or stored in bulk. Always wear appropriate eye and face protection, as well as gloves.
Application: After mixing, spread the material over the floor promptly to account for the self-heating effect, which reduces working time. Use a brush or a short/medium-pile roller for application. Depending on the surface porosity, one or more coats may be necessary to achieve a uniform coating. Movement joints in the subfloor must be continued through the topping and sealed properly, while construction joints and cracks that are not subject to movement may be overlaid. However, any movement in the floor could cause these defects to reflect through the system. Isolation joints should be included in areas prone to high thermal movement, such as around ovens and freezers. When applying ARDEX Fine Aggregate as a sand blind, do so while the ARDEX R 5 E is still fresh; this involves covering the wet surface with a layer of dry aggregate. Excess fine aggregate should be removed by brushing or vacuuming once the ARDEX R 5 E has set, leaving a finish similar to sandpaper.
