ARDEX S 27 W is a rapid hardening and drying tile adhesive specifically designed for fixing moisture-sensitive natural stones, as well as porcelain, mosaics, fully vitrified and ceramic tiles, and rigid foam insulating materials like polystyrene in internal dry locations. Its advanced ARDEX Rapidry Technology ensures that mix water is fully bound into the hardened adhesive, significantly reducing the risk of water staining on natural stones and preventing water damage to wooden substrates. Ideal for both wall and floor tiles, including use on heated screeds, ARDEX S 27 W is particularly effective for translucent stones and situations requiring a light-colored background. This significantly reduces the risk of water staining on moisture-sensitive natural stone tiles and prevents water from impacting wooden substrates. It is especially effective for installing translucent stones and natural stones where a light-colored background is desired. Classified as C2 FTE S1 under BS EN 12004, ARDEX S 27 W is recognized as an improved, fast-setting, deformable cementitious adhesive with reduced slip and extended open time. It boasts a tensile adhesion strength exceeding 1 N/mm² and offers an extended open time of up to 30 minutes. ARDEX S 27 W adheres strongly to a variety of construction materials, including concrete, cement and sand screeds, heated sub-floors, anhydrite screeds, and existing ceramic tiles.
Surface Preparation: Ensure that all surfaces where tiles will be installed are clean, firm, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants that might impede adhesion. The surfaces must be strong enough to support the weight of the tiles. Allow the background to dry as specified in BS 5385 and apply a primer if necessary before tiling. Follow the guidelines outlined in BS 5385 and BS 8000: Part 11 for proper installation. For ceramic tiles, the surface should meet Surface Regularity 1 standards, with any gap under a 2m straightedge not exceeding 3mm. ARDEX S 27 W can be applied to both dry and moist surfaces, but moisture-sensitive materials must be completely dry and stay dry after installation.
Mixing: Combine ARDEX S 27 W powder with the recommended amount of clean water in a clean container while stirring to achieve a slump-free, workable mortar. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a 10mm chuck and a variable-speed electric drill makes mixing easier. The mixing ratio is approximately 2.5 parts ARDEX S 27 W powder to 1 part water, with a 20kg bag requiring about 6.6 liters of water. Do not exceed the maximum water content. Adjust the adhesive consistency as needed for site conditions and materials. The mixed mortar should be applied at temperatures above 5°C and has a pot life of approximately 45 to 60 minutes at 20°C.
Application: Apply the mixed adhesive to the prepared surface with a trowel and comb it with a suitably sized notched trowel to create a ribbed mortar bed. Set the tiles within the adhesive’s open time and press them into place with a twisting and sliding motion to ensure proper contact. For wall tiling in dry internal locations, ensure maximum contact between the tile and adhesive. Tiles smaller than 0.1 m² but heavier than 70% of the background’s weight capacity should be solidly bedded. Tiles of 0.1 m² or larger should also be solidly bedded. When tiling floors, a solid bed usually requires buttering the back of the tiles before placing them into the ribbed bed to prevent voids. Select the notched trowel size based on tile size, surface type, tile back profile, and required coverage. ARDEX S 27 W offers an extended open time of up to 30 minutes when freshly mixed, as per BS EN 12004.
Grouting: Grouting can begin once the tile bed has set sufficiently to hold the tiles in place. ARDEX S 27 W typically hardens enough for grouting after about 2 hours at 20°C, though this may vary with tile and background porosity as well as temperature. Higher temperatures will shorten and lower temperatures will lengthen these times. Use ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout for standard applications and consider ARDEX MG Grout for moisture-sensitive natural stones to minimize the risk of picture framing and water staining.
