ARDEX S 28 and ARDEX S 28 W are high-performance, rapid hardening, and drying tile adhesives, specially formulated for fixing moisture-sensitive natural stone tiles, as well as porcelain, mosaics, fully vitrified, and ceramic tiles in internal dry areas. Their unique semi-pourable consistency is ideal for large format floor tiles. The ARDEX Rapidry Technology incorporated in both adhesives binds all mix water into the hardened adhesive, virtually eliminating the risk of water staining on natural stone tiles or moisture affecting wooden substrates. ARDEX S 28 W is also specifically suited for translucent stones and those requiring a light-coloured background bed. Both products are classified as improved fast-setting cementitious adhesives with reduced slip and extended open time under BS EN 12004.

ARDEX S 28 and ARDEX S 28 W feature ARDEX Rapidry Technology, which ensures all mix water is fully absorbed into the hardened adhesive. This greatly reduces the risk of water staining on moisture-sensitive natural stone tiles and prevents moisture from affecting wooden substrates. ARDEX S 28 W is particularly suited for translucent stones and natural stone installations where a light-coloured adhesive bed is needed. Classified as C2 FTE S1 under BS EN 12004, both adhesives are fast-setting, with reduced slip and extended open time. They offer a tensile adhesion strength greater than 1 N/mm² and provide up to 30 minutes of open time for easy application. The semi-pourable consistency allows for solid bed fixing of large format floor tiles, and they adhere well to various materials such as concrete, screeds, heated sub-floors, and existing ceramic tiles.
Surface Preparation
The surfaces and backgrounds for tile installation must be clean, firm, and free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, and any other substances that could hinder adhesion. Ensure the background has had sufficient drying time as per BS 5385-3:2007 before fixing tiles.
Grouting
Tiles should be installed in accordance with BS 5385 and BS 8000: Part 11 for proper workmanship. Backgrounds intended for ceramic tiles must meet Surface Regularity 1 standards, ensuring any gap under a 2m straight edge does not exceed 3mm. ARDEX S 28 and ARDEX S 28 W can be applied to dry or moist surfaces, but moisture-sensitive materials must be completely dry and remain so after installation.
Mixing
ARDEX S 28 and ARDEX S 28 W powder should be mixed with clean water in a clean container, creating a semi-pourable, easily workable mortar. For best results, use an ARDEX mixing paddle attached to a variable-speed electric drill with a 10mm chuck. Mix approximately 3.5 parts powder to 1 part water by volume. A 20kg bag requires about 6.6 litres of water. Avoid exceeding the recommended water content. The consistency can be adjusted based on site conditions and the materials being used. Apply the mortar in temperatures above 5°C. The pot life is roughly 45 to 60 minutes at 20°C.
Application
Apply the mixed mortar to the prepared surface using a trowel, and comb through with a notched trowel to create straight ribs. Tiles should be placed within the adhesive’s open time, using a twisting and sliding motion to ensure solid bed fixing. ARDEX S 28 and ARDEX S 28 W offer an extended open time of at least 30 minutes, though for optimal performance in typical UK conditions, it is recommended to fix tiles within 20 minutes and adjust them within 15 minutes at 20°C. Grouting can begin once the tile bed has sufficiently hardened to prevent tile displacement. Floor tiles are typically ready to accept foot traffic after 2 hours at 20°C, depending on tile and background porosity. Higher temperatures will reduce, and lower temperatures will extend this time. Grout the tile joints with the appropriate ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout, and for moisture-sensitive natural stones, consider ARDEX MG Grout to minimize the risk of picture framing and water staining.
