ARDEX SD-T B base mix is specifically formulated to pre-level concrete surfaces before the application of ARDEX K 80. This Industrial Floor System combines durability, low maintenance, and ease of application with the innovative ARDEX ‘Rapidry Formula,’ which chemically binds the mixed water, enabling the product to dry quickly while developing strength. When thick applications are needed, ARDEX SD-T B can be applied at depths ranging from 6mm to 50mm to achieve a level base, and it allows for a minimum thickness of 5mm of ARDEX K 80 to be applied just hours after its application. For installing ceramic or natural stone tiles, a minimum thickness of 10mm of ARDEX SD-T B is recommended.

Key Points:

  • Pre-Leveling: ARDEX SD-T B is designed to pre-level concrete surfaces for ARDEX K 80 application.
  • Rapid Drying: The ‘Rapidry Formula’ allows for quick drying and strength development.
  • Thickness Range: Can be applied from 6mm to 50mm to create a level base.
  • Tile Installation: Requires a minimum thickness of 10mm when fixing ceramic or natural stone tiles.

Coverage: ARDEX SD-T B base mix has a coverage rate of approximately 1.87 kg per square meter per millimeter of thickness. For example, one bag will cover around 1.3 m² at a thickness of 10 mm. Note: This coverage estimate assumes a flat, level surface; additional material should be considered for rough or uneven areas.

Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX SD-T B base mix should be stored in unopened packaging, elevated from the ground, in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored properly as outlined, the shelf life is 12 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

Ardex SD-T B is ideal for use over existing concrete surfaces, a base for laying tiles and natural stone, and a base to Ardes K 80 topping layer.

Substrate Preparation

The concrete surface must be solid, stable, and free from dust and other contaminants such as paint, lime coatings, plaster, curing agents, laitance, and adhesive residues, which could hinder adhesion to the substrate. The concrete must have sufficient strength to support ARDEX SD-T B, with BS 8204-3 recommending a minimum surface tensile strength of 0.8 N/mm² for concrete bases receiving wearing or leveling screeds. Note: For heavy-duty applications, the minimum surface tensile strength should be 1.5 N/mm². Prior to mechanical preparation, use an appropriate degreaser to eliminate polish, wax, grease, oil, and other contaminants. Concrete surfaces must be mechanically prepared through scabbling, grinding, or shot blasting, and then thoroughly vacuumed before priming. All surfaces require priming; it is advisable to use a sand-blinded application of ARDEX R 3 E Solvent Free Epoxy Primer or ARDEX R 5 E Rapid Curing Solvent Free Epoxy Primer as specified in the technical data sheet. The sand for creating a blinded/aggregate keyed surface should be ARDEX Fine Aggregate, sized between 1 to 1.5 mm. Weak or overwatered concrete surfaces should be mechanically prepared down to sound concrete. Direct-to-earth concrete subfloors must be dry and have an effective damp-proof membrane, such as ARDEX DPM 1 C or ARDEX DPM 1 C R. Any joints or cracks in the concrete that may experience differential movement, such as movement joints, should extend to the surface of the ARDEX K 80. Note that ARDEX SD-T B should not be used in external applications or areas prone to wetting.

Mixing ARDEX SD-T B Base Mix

When mixing ARDEX SD-T B base mix, use 3.5 to 3.75 liters of water per 25 kg bag. Do not exceed 3.75 liters of water for optimal results.

Application of ARDEX SD-T B

Pour the mixed ARDEX SD-T B compound onto the prepared subfloor. The mortar will flow and self-level during the first 10 minutes of its 30-minute working time at 20°C. For thicker applications, an ARDEX pin leveller with height adjustment should be used. Depending on the desired finish, a spiked roller can be employed for final touches. The minimum recommended application temperature is 10°C. For large subfloors requiring leveling or thick applications, it is advisable to pump the ARDEX SD-T B Industrial Floor System.
