ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection is an advanced, cement-based waterproof coating, designed for rapid drying, allowing tiling to begin as soon as 90 minutes after application. This product features an adjustable mix ratio, making it versatile for various uses including filling holes, gaps, and joints, as well as for general waterproofing purposes. It is ideal for waterproofing surfaces such as cement and sand renders, gypsum plaster, and plasterboard, ensuring a reliable foundation for tiling in both domestic and commercial environments like kitchens, showers, and bathrooms. It’s important to note that according to BS 5385-1, plywood and other wood-based sheets or boards are not suitable for direct tiling. Such timber-based sheets should either be replaced or covered with plasterboard or a suitable tile backer board before applying ARDEX WPC. Additionally, this coating can be applied to concrete floors and cement screeds to protect them from surface water ingress.

Key Points

  1. Rapid Drying: ARDEX WPC allows for tiling to commence just 90 minutes after application, providing a quick and efficient solution for waterproofing projects.
  2. Versatile Application: With an adjustable mix ratio, this coating can be used not only for waterproofing but also for filling holes, gaps, and joints, making them highly adaptable for various tasks.
  3. Suitable Substrates: Designed for use on backgrounds such as cement and sand render, gypsum plaster, and plasterboard, and are ideal for environments like kitchens, showers, and bathrooms.
  4. Surface Preparation Requirements: Plywood and other wood-based boards should be replaced or covered with plasterboard or a suitable tile backer board before applying ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W. These products are also effective for protecting concrete floors and cement screeds from surface water.

Storage and Shelf Life – ARDEX WPC and ARDEX WPC W should be kept in unopened packaging, off the ground, in a cool, dry environment, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored under these conditions, the shelf life is 12 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX WPC is designed for waterproofing various backgrounds, including cement and sand render, gypsum plaster, and plasterboard, before tiling in both domestic and commercial settings such as kitchens, showers, and bathrooms.

Surface Preparation

Ensure surfaces are dry, solid, and free from oil, dust, dirt, or any other materials that could impede adhesion. Gypsum plaster must be fully dry and strong enough to support the weight of the tiling. Any boarded surfaces should be capable of bearing the tiles and must be securely fixed with closely spaced screws, adhering to the relevant BS 5385 standards.

Note: Moisture-sensitive backgrounds should be protected from moisture ingress. External walls should either be of cavity construction or have appropriate protection to prevent moisture from penetrating through.

Mixing

Mix One: For a trowelable paste used to seal internal corners, fill holes, and plug joints around pipes, baths, and showers, mix 0.7 parts ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W Liquid with 1 part ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W Powder by weight.

Mix Two: For a flowing consistency suitable for application with a brush or roller, mix 1 part ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W Liquid with 1 part ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W Powder by weight. The mixed ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W has a pot life of approximately 45 minutes at 20°C; this time will vary with temperature, being shorter in higher temperatures and longer in lower ones.

Technical Data: Once the mixed material starts to set and thicken, discard it and do not add more ARDEX WPC Liquid to it.

Application

  • Mix One: Apply using a spatula, pallet knife, or trowel to seal joints in corners and fill gaps around fixtures, pipes, etc. For areas prone to cracking, reinforce with ARDEX Mesh Scrim Tape before applying Mix One. To fill uneven areas, apply a single layer of Mix One, at least 3mm thick, to achieve effective waterproofing; no additional overcoating with Mix Two is necessary.
  • Mix Two: Use for complete surface coating. Apply evenly with a brush or roller, ensuring thorough coverage, especially in corners. A second coat is needed to achieve effective waterproofing, with a total thickness of at least 0.8mm. Apply the second coat about 30 minutes after the first. Ceramic tiles or mosaics can be fixed onto the second coat after approximately 1 hour at 20°C; drying times will vary with temperature. Do not apply ARDEX WPC or ARDEX WPC W at temperatures below 5°C.
