ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive is a rapid hardening and drying, white cement-based adhesive classified as C2 FTE S1, which means it is an “Improved deformable fast setting cementitious adhesive with reduced slip and extended open time,” according to BS EN 12004. This adhesive is specially formulated for fixing natural stone floor and wall tiles, including moisture-sensitive and uncalibrated natural stones. It can also be used on concrete slabs and ceramic tiles, including porcelain, in both internal and external applications. Remarkably, tiles installed with ARDEX X 32 can be grouted and subjected to foot traffic just 3 hours after installation at normal temperatures (20°C), even at maximum thickness, making it ideal for situations where rapid drying is necessary to minimize the risk of moisture staining. The adhesive is composed of high-quality synthetic resins, fillers, and special cements mixed with water to create a mortar that is easy to apply, with a working time of approximately 60 minutes, and it adheres strongly to a variety of building materials.

Key Points:

  • Classified as C2 FTE S1, indicating improved deformability and fast setting with extended open time.
  • Suitable for fixing moisture-sensitive and uncalibrated natural stone tiles, as well as concrete slabs and ceramic tiles.
  • Allows for grouting and foot traffic just 3 hours after installation at normal temperatures.
  • Composed of high-quality materials, resulting in a mortar with a working time of about 60 minutes and strong adhesion to various surfaces.

Coverage
ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive requires approximately 1.2 kg of powder per square meter for each mm of bed thickness. A 20kg bag can cover about 5.5 m² when applied as a solid 3mm adhesive bed.

Storage and Shelf Life
To ensure optimal performance, ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive should be stored in unopened packaging, elevated off the ground, in cool, dry conditions, and protected from excessive draughts. When stored correctly, this product has a shelf life of 12 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive is especially effective in applications where rapid drying of the adhesive bed is essential to minimize the risk of moisture staining on the stone. This white powder consists of special cements, high-quality synthetic resins, and fillers, which, when mixed with water, create an easily workable mortar with a working time of approximately 60 minutes. The mortar exhibits strong adhesion to a variety of building materials, including concrete, cement/sand render and screeds, brickwork, and blockwork. In some cases, surface preparation such as priming may be necessary before installation. For guidance on working with asphalt floors, refer to the “Fixing Ceramic Tiles to Internal Asphalt Floors” data sheet.

Surface Preparation

The surface to which the tiles will be adhered must be clean, firm, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other barrier materials, as well as strong enough to support the weight of the tiles. Ensure that the drying time for the background, as specified in the relevant part of BS 5385, has elapsed prior to tile installation. ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive can be applied to both dry and moist surfaces, such as cement/sand and concrete. However, moisture-sensitive materials must be dry and remain dry after fixing. Calcium sulfate-based screeds, such as anhydrite or hemihydrate screeds, should be dry, and the surface must be adequately prepared before priming with ARDEX P 51 primer, diluted at a ratio of 1 part primer to 3 parts water. Note that the surface of calcium sulfate-based screeds should be prepared according to the screed manufacturer’s instructions. The adhesive bed should not exceed 6mm on these screeds. For very smooth, dense, and impervious surfaces (e.g., existing ceramic tiles or terrazzo), the surface should be primed with ARDEX P 82 or ARDEX P 4 primer, suitable for internal dry areas. ARDEX P 4 is a solvent-free, ready-mixed rapid-drying primer that creates a textured surface and dries in as little as 30 minutes, making it particularly useful for tile-on-tile applications.

Mixing

To mix ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive, add the powder to clean water in a clean mixing container while stirring until a workable mortar is achieved. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a 10mm chuck and a variable speed electric drill makes mixing effortless. The mixing proportions are approximately 7.2 liters of water per 20kg of ARDEX X 32 for floor tiles and about 6.4 liters of water per 20kg for wall tiling. The equivalent volume ratio is approximately 1 part water to 2.5 parts powder for floors and 1 part water to 2.75 parts powder for walls. Please refer to the latest technical or health and safety data on this product by consulting the technical or health and safety data sheet available online at www.ardex.co.uk. The mortar is ready for immediate use, with a working time of approximately 60 minutes at 20°C. Note that you should not mix more than can be used within this timeframe, as the working time and strength development will be affected by temperature variations. Do not apply the adhesive at temperatures below 5°C.

Fixing Techniques

For installing natural stone tiles, use a suitably sized notched trowel to create a ribbed mortar bed on the substrate, ensuring that the tiles are firmly bedded while the mortar remains moist and soft. Floor tiles, slabs with keyed back profiles, and translucent stones should be buttered to achieve solid bedding. Limit the area covered with ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive to ensure tiles can be installed within the open time. If applied immediately after mixing, the open time is approximately 20 minutes; however, this time will be significantly reduced if the mixed mortar is allowed to sit longer before application. ARDEX X 32 is classified as having an extended open time of at least 30 minutes, as per BS EN 12004. For optimal performance under typical UK conditions, tiles should be fixed within 20 minutes. On particularly rough or uneven surfaces, it is advisable to pre-level the substrate with ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive mortar. Once this initial layer has hardened (approximately 3 hours after application), proceed with the normal fixing method. Holes and depressions can be pre-filled, provided that the substrate is sufficiently strong and the total thickness of adhesive and pre-levelling mortar does not exceed 30mm. When fixing stone tiles on gypsum wall plaster with a weight restriction of 20kg per square meter or when an adhesive bed of 3mm or less is required, use ARDEX S16 W or ARDEX S 27 W.

Grouting

Natural stone tiles and slabs fixed with ARDEX X 32 Natural Stone Adhesive can be grouted as soon as the tile bed is sufficiently firm, typically around 3 hours after installation at 20°C. For internal areas, use ARDEX MG Rapid Drying Marble and Natural Stone Grout, which is suitable for moisture-sensitive marble and other natural stone slabs. For external areas, ARDEX-FLEX FL or ARDEX-FLEX FS should be used.
