ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W are highly versatile, multipurpose tile adhesives designed for a wide range of applications. These adhesives are suitable for fixing ceramic, porcelain, glass mosaics, and most non-moisture-sensitive natural stone floor and wall tiles. Their frost and weather-resistant properties make them ideal for both internal and external use, including wet areas, swimming pools, and areas exposed to harsh weather conditions. The mixed mortar offers a slump-free consistency with high initial grab, allowing for the secure installation of heavy wall tiles without the need for battens and spacers.
ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W adhere strongly to a variety of construction materials, such as concrete, cement and sand renders and screeds, heated sub-floors, brickwork, blockwork, gypsum plaster, anhydrite screeds, plasterboard, and even existing ceramic tiled surfaces. These adhesives can also be used for bonding rigid foam insulating materials, such as polystyrene and polyurethane. For fixing tiles to internal wooden floors, it is recommended to consult the ARDEX X 7001 product data sheet. Additionally, ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W are suitable for use with under-floor heating systems, ensuring reliable adhesion in these specialized environments.
Key Points:
- Wide Range of Applications: ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W are suitable for various tiles, including ceramic, porcelain, glass mosaics, and most non-moisture-sensitive natural stones, and can be used both internally and externally, including in wet areas and swimming pools.
- Durability and Resistance: These adhesives are frost and weather-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor applications and areas exposed to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and swimming pools.
- Strong Adhesion to Multiple Surfaces: The adhesives adhere strongly to concrete, cement and sand renders, screeds, heated sub-floors, brickwork, plasterboard, and existing ceramic tiles, as well as rigid foam insulating materials like polystyrene and polyurethane.
- Ease of Installation: The slump-free consistency and high initial grab of the mixed mortar facilitate the secure installation of heavy wall tiles without the need for battens and spacers, reducing installation time and effort.
Benefits
- Long Working Time: Offers a 5-hour pot life, allowing for extended use without the adhesive setting too quickly.
- Extended Application Window: Provides a 30-minute open time, giving you more flexibility during installation.
- Superior Workability: Features excellent handling and resistance to slump, ensuring tiles stay in place during installation.
- Versatile Compatibility: Suitable for nearly all tile types, including non-moisture-sensitive natural stone.
- Flexible Use: Ideal for both wall and floor applications, accommodating various project needs.
- Broad Application Range: Can be used in internal areas, swimming pools, and external areas when combined with ARDEX E 90 Mortar Admix.
- Underfloor Heating Compatible: Suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

Ardex X7W is suitable for installing ceramic, porcelain, glass mosaics, and most non-moisture-sensitive natural stone tiles on both floors and walls. ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W are resistant to frost and weather, making them ideal for use indoors and outdoors, including wet areas and swimming pools.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Before tiling, ensure that the surfaces are clean, firm, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other substances that may hinder adhesion. The surfaces should be strong enough to support the weight of the tiles. It’s crucial that the background is adequately dried, as specified in the relevant sections of BS 5385, and properly primed, if necessary, before tiling begins. Tiles should be installed according to BS 5385 and BS 8000: Part 11 standards. For ceramic tiles, the surface should be finished with a tolerance where any gap under a 2m straight edge does not exceed 3mm (Surface Regularity 1). ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W can be applied to both dry and moist surfaces; however, moisture-sensitive materials must remain dry after tiling. For showers, consider using the ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection Coating System to create a waterproof barrier that prevents water damage to floors and walls. If tanking is required in swimming pools before tiling, ARDEX S 7 PLUS is recommended.
MIXING
To prepare the adhesive, add ARDEX X 7 G or ARDEX X 7 W powder to water in a clean container, stirring thoroughly to achieve a slump-free, easily workable mortar. Using an ARDEX mixing paddle with a variable speed electric drill is recommended for efficient mixing. The mixing ratio by volume is approximately 2.5 parts powder to 1 part water. For a 20kg bag, about 6 liters of water is required. The consistency can be adjusted to suit site conditions, but it must always remain slump-free. The mixed mortar has a pot life of around 5 hours at 20°C and should be applied at temperatures above 5°C. When fixing glass mosaic and porcelain/fully vitrified tiles in swimming pools or external locations, ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W must be mixed with ARDEX E 90 Mortar Admix (3.6kg). However, extruded or keyed back tiles do not require ARDEX E 90 in these locations.
APPLICATION
Apply the mixed adhesive to the prepared surface with a trowel, then comb through with a suitably sized notched trowel to create a ribbed mortar bed. Tiles should be set within the adhesive’s open time and pressed into place with a twisting and sliding motion to ensure proper contact. For dry internal wall tiling, maximize contact between the tile and adhesive. Tiles smaller than 0.1 m² but heavier than 70% of the background’s load capacity should be solidly bedded, as should tiles larger than 0.1 m². When tiling floors, wet areas like showers and pools, or external areas, ensure a solid bed by buttering the back of the tiles immediately before placement to avoid voids beneath them. The notched trowel size should match the tile size, surface, and required coverage. ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W offer an extended open time of at least 30 minutes per BS EN 12004, though for optimal performance, tiles should be fixed within 20 minutes and can be adjusted for up to 10 minutes at 20°C. For areas needing rendering, ARDEX AM 100 rapid hardening render may be used, allowing tiling to commence just 2 hours after application at 20°C.
GROUTING
Grouting can begin once the tile bed has hardened enough to prevent tile displacement. ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX X 7 W typically allow wall tile grouting after 8 hours at 20°C, depending on the tile and background porosity. Floor tiles can generally be grouted after 24 hours at 20°C, with the surface able to accept foot traffic. Higher temperatures will shorten, and lower temperatures will lengthen these times. Use the appropriate ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout or ARDEX EG 18 PLUS Epoxide Tile Grout for joints requiring chemical resistance and hygiene.
