Bond It XTREME is a versatile silicone sealant suitable for a range of applications. Here are some common uses:
- Sanitary Applications: Bond It XTREME is ideal for use in connection and expansion joints in bathrooms, kitchens, toilet areas, and swimming pool areas. It can be used to seal gaps around sinks, bathtubs, showers, toilets, and other sanitary fixtures, providing a waterproof seal that helps prevent water penetration and the growth of mould and mildew.
- Swimming Pool Areas: While Bond It XTREME is not suitable for use inside swimming pools, it can be used in the surrounding areas. It can be applied to seal gaps and joints around swimming pool edges, decks, coping stones, and other areas where water exposure may occur.
- General Construction: Bond It XTREME can be used in various construction applications, such as sealing gaps and joints in windows, doors, skylights, and other exterior fixtures. It can also be used for sealing joints in concrete, brickwork, and other building materials.
- Glazing and Glass Applications: This silicone sealant can be used for glazing applications, including sealing gaps and joints in windows, glass doors, and skylights. It offers excellent adhesion to glass and can help provide a watertight and airtight seal.
- General Household Use: Bond It XTREME can be used for sealing gaps and joints in various household applications, such as sealing around kitchen countertops, backsplashes, and tiled surfaces. It can also be used for sealing gaps in furniture, cabinets, and other woodworking projects.
Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application and ensure that the surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust and grease before applying the sealant.
APPLICATION
- Prepare the surface: Ensure that the surfaces to be sealed are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, and other contaminants. Use appropriate cleaning methods and allow the surface to dry completely before applying the sealant.
- Cut the nozzle: Cut the nozzle of the sealant cartridge at a 45° angle. The size of the nozzle opening should be slightly larger than the joint you are sealing.
- Apply the sealant: Load the cartridge into a standard sealant gun and apply the sealant in a steady, continuous bead along the joint or gap to be sealed. For bath surrounds, it is recommended to fill the bath halfway with water before applying the sealant at the midpoint of the joint. You may use masking tape if necessary.
- Fill large gaps: If you are sealing large gaps, it is recommended to use polythene foam, rod, or tape to provide support and minimize sealant wastage. Place the support material in the gap before applying the sealant.
- Tool down the sealant: Within 5 minutes of applying the sealant, use a wet spatula or Bond It SEALANT APPLICATOR TOOL to smooth and shape the sealant. This helps ensure proper adhesion and a neat finish. Wait until the silicone has cured before emptying the bath of water. If any trims are required, they should be bedded into the silicone within 5 minutes of application.
- Sealing waste outlets: When sealing waste outlets in sinks and baths, apply the sealant so that it will be in compression after tightening the connecting pipes. This helps create a watertight seal.
- Test for compatibility: Before using Bond It XTREME with metalized plastic trims, it is advisable to test for any potential discoloration by applying a small amount of sealant on an inconspicuous area and observing the results.
Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines specific to Bond It XTREME for best results and safety precautions.
LIMITATIONS
- Compatibility with Existing Paint Systems: Due to the wide variety of paint systems available, it is recommended to conduct a compatibility test before applying Bond It XTREME silicone sealant over existing paint. Apply a small amount of the sealant in an inconspicuous area and observe any adverse reactions, such as cracking, peeling, or discoloration. If there are any negative effects, it may indicate incompatibility, and an alternative sealant should be considered.
- Yellowing with White Alkyd Resin Paints: Bond It XTREME silicone sealant may have the potential to yellow when in contact with white alkyd resin paints. It is advisable to perform a test in a small, discreet area to assess any yellowing or discoloration that may occur. If yellowing is observed, it is recommended to use an alternative sealant that is compatible with white alkyd resin paints.
- Risk of Corrosion on Bare Iron or Non-Ferrous Metals: When using Bond It XTREME silicone sealant on bare iron or non-ferrous metals, there is a risk of corrosion. It is important to ensure that the metal surfaces are properly primed and protected before applying the sealant. Using a suitable primer or pre-treatment specifically designed for the metal surface can help prevent corrosion.
By conducting compatibility tests and taking necessary precautions, you can ensure the suitability and effectiveness of Bond It XTREME silicone sealant for your specific application. If any concerns arise or if you are uncertain about compatibility with a particular surface, it is recommended to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or seek professional advice.
