DOWSIL 995 Silicone Structural Sealant is a one-part, neutral-curing silicone specifically engineered for structural bonding applications involving glass and metal in both factory and field settings. While its surface cure and cure-in-depth rates can be influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, high temperatures combined with high humidity may slow down the surface cure rate of this sealant. This elastomeric adhesive provides exceptional unprimed adhesion to most building substrates, making it particularly suitable for structural glazing applications in hurricane or impact-rated windows and doors. Additionally, it boasts a movement capability of ±50%, allowing it to accommodate structural shifts effectively.

Key Points:

  1. Application: Designed for structural bonding of glass and metal in factory or field conditions.
  2. Curing Characteristics: Surface cure and depth cure rates are affected by temperature and humidity, with high humidity potentially slowing surface cure.
  3. Adhesion: Offers superior unprimed adhesion to various building substrates, ideal for structural glazing in hurricane-rated installations.
  4. Movement Capability: Features a movement capability of ±50%, allowing it to handle structural movement effectively.

Dowsil 995 is suitable for structural joints in small to medium-sized buildings can utilize protective glass sealants designed to withstand bomb blasts, enhance school security glazing, and endure severe weather conditions.

Preparation

Thoroughly clean all joints and glazing pockets, ensuring the removal of foreign materials and contaminants such as grease, oil, dust, water, frost, surface dirt, old sealants, glazing compounds, and protective coatings.

Application Method

Begin by installing back-up materials or joint fillers, setting blocks, spacer shims, and tapes. Mask areas adjacent to the joints to achieve clean sealant lines. While primer is usually unnecessary for nonporous surfaces, it may be beneficial for optimal sealing on certain porous surfaces; conducting a test placement is recommended.

Apply DOWSIL™ 995 Silicone Structural Sealant in a continuous manner using positive pressure. The sealant can be dispensed with various air-operated guns and most bulk dispensing equipment. Before a skin forms, typically within 10 minutes, tool the sealant with light pressure to ensure it adheres well to the backing material and joint surfaces. Remove the masking tape promptly after tooling the bead.
