Hodgson Sealants Silfix U8 is a type of silicone sealant designed for use in the building envelope, which refers to the external structural elements of a building that are responsible for maintaining its integrity and protecting it from the elements. Here are some key features and characteristics of Silfix U8:
- Low modulus: The term “low modulus” in this context means that the silicone sealant has high flexibility and can accommodate movement in the building materials without cracking or losing adhesion.
- Neutral cure: Silfix U8 is a neutral cure silicone sealant, which means it releases alcohol as it cures. This type of curing process is less likely to cause corrosion in metals compared to acetic acid cure (also known as “acetoxy cure”) silicone sealants.
- Solvent-free: The absence of solvents in the formulation makes Silfix U8 more environmentally friendly and reduces the risk of solvent-related issues during application.
- Alkoxy silicone: Alkoxy silicones are a type of moisture-curing silicone sealants that have good weather resistance and adhesion properties. They are commonly used in construction applications.
- Excellent application characteristics: Silfix U8 is formulated to have smooth and easy application properties, making it suitable for professional applicators to work with efficiently.
- Wide range of substrate adhesion: The product is designed to adhere well to various substrates commonly found in building construction, such as glass, metals, concrete, and some plastics.
- Professional applicator suitability: Silfix U8 is specifically packaged and formulated for use by professional applicators. This indicates that it may require skill and experience to apply effectively, ensuring optimal performance and results.
Silicone sealants like Silfix U8 are commonly used in the construction industry to seal gaps and joints in the building envelope, providing protection against water infiltration, air leakage, and thermal exchange. Before using any sealant, it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and ensure compatibility with the specific substrates and application requirements.

Silfix U8 silicone sealant is ideal for the following:
- Perimeter pointing of door and window frames: Silfix U8 can be used to seal the gaps and joints between the frames of doors and windows to prevent water infiltration, air leakage, and improve insulation.
- Sealing curtain walling and pre-formed panels: The sealant is suitable for sealing joints and connections in curtain walls and pre-formed panels, providing weather resistance and structural integrity.
- Sealing of construction joints where movement can occur: Silfix U8’s low modulus characteristic allows it to accommodate movement in construction joints without losing adhesion, making it ideal for flexible and durable sealing.
- Bonding and sealing of uPVC trims and components: The sealant can be used to bond and seal uPVC trims and components, providing a watertight and secure connection.
- Fully compatible with Hodgson’s Flexistrip and range of butyl strip sealants: Silfix U8 is formulated to work well with Hodgson’s Flexistrip and butyl strip sealants, ensuring compatibility for specific applications.
- Glass to Glass sealing: The sealant is suitable for creating a strong and durable seal between glass surfaces.
- Sealing between dissimilar materials: Silfix U8 can be used to seal joints between different materials like uPVC, aluminium, composite, and timber frames into masonry, brick, and plaster walls.
- Joints in roofing, cladding, insulation, and guttering: The sealant can be applied to seal joints in roofing, cladding, insulation, and guttering systems, providing protection against leaks and weather-related damage.
- For use in expansion joints: Silfix U8 is appropriate for use in expansion joints, where movement is expected due to temperature changes or other factors.
- Sealing and bonding of metals: The sealant is effective in bonding and sealing metals such as lead, copper, and bronze, providing a secure and weather-resistant connection.
- General weather and draft-proofing applications: Silfix U8 can be used for various weatherproofing and draft-proofing applications around buildings to improve energy efficiency and comfort.
Please note that while Silfix U8 is designed for these applications, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and test the compatibility and suitability of the sealant for specific substrates and conditions before use.
APPLICATION
- Surface Preparation:
- Ensure all surfaces are clean: Remove any dust, dirt, or debris from the joint or surface that will be sealed. Clean the area thoroughly to ensure proper adhesion of the silicone sealant.
- Dry surfaces: Make sure the surfaces are completely dry before applying the sealant. Moisture or water on the surfaces can affect the adhesion and curing process of the silicone.
- No frost: Do not apply the sealant if the surfaces are frosty or frozen, as this can hinder the proper bonding of the sealant.
- Free from grease and loose materials: Remove any grease or oily substances from the surfaces. Also, clear away any loose materials or old sealant that may interfere with the new application.
- Apply primer if necessary: In some cases, especially with certain substrates, a primer may be required to enhance adhesion. Refer to the product guidelines or perform testing to determine if a primer is necessary.
- Application:
- Use a skeleton gun: Load the Silfix U8 silicone sealant into a skeleton gun for easy and controlled application.
- Apply into the joint: Apply the sealant into the joint or gap, ensuring that it makes good contact with the surfaces on both sides.
- Neat finish with masking tape: If a particularly neat finish is desired, you can use masking tape to cover the face edges of the joint before applying the sealant. Remove the tape immediately after tooling to achieve clean edges.
- Tooling:
- Tool immediately after application: Once the sealant is applied, use a suitable tool (such as a spatula or tooling spoon) to smooth and shape the sealant immediately.
- Within the working time: Silicone sealants have a limited “working time” during which they can be tooled and shaped effectively. Refer to the product’s technical datasheet for the specific working time of Silfix U8 and ensure tooling is completed within that period.
By following these steps carefully, you can ensure a proper bond and achieve a professional-looking finish with Silfix U8 silicone sealant. Always refer to the product’s technical datasheet and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for the best results.
LIMITATIONS
- Not suitable for structural glazing applications: Silfix U8 should not be used for bonding or sealing glass to supporting structures in applications where it is expected to carry structural loads.
- Not suitable for construction of aquaria or in areas of permanent immersion: The sealant is not intended for use in environments where it will be continuously submerged, such as in the construction of aquariums or underwater applications.
- Do not use on bitumen/asphalt substrates or those that bleed oil, plasticizers, and solvents: Silfix U8 should not be applied on surfaces that contain bitumen, asphalt, or materials that can release oil, plasticizers, or solvents. These substances can interfere with the adhesion and curing of the silicone.
- Silfix U8 is not paintable: Once cured, Silfix U8 silicone sealant cannot be painted over. If the sealant is visible and needs to be painted, an alternative paintable sealant should be used.
- Not suitable for the bedding of IGU’s or laminated glass: Silfix U8 is not recommended for use in installing or sealing Insulating Glass Units (IGUs) or laminated glass. Instead, a different product, such as Silfix U9, should be used for such applications.
It’s essential to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the appropriate and effective use of Silfix U8 silicone sealant. Always consult the product’s technical datasheet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for specific applications. If unsure about the suitability of the product for a particular use, it’s best to seek advice from the manufacturer or a qualified professional.
