Kerabond T is a cement-based powder available in grey or white, made from fine-grade synthetic resins and special admixtures developed in MAPEI’s R&D laboratories. When mixed with water, it forms a trowelable mortar with excellent bonding strength, low slump, and high grab, allowing it to be applied vertically without sagging, even for heavy tiles. It hardens without noticeable shrinkage, providing strong adhesion to standard construction materials. When mixed with Isolastic instead of water, Kerabond meets the requirements of class C2ES2, a highly deformable cementitious adhesive with extended open time, as per EN 12004 standards.

Key Points:

Kerabond T is a cement-based powder available in grey or white, designed for strong bonding.

Mixed with water, it creates a mortar with high grab and low slump, ideal for vertical applications without sagging.

It hardens without shrinkage and adheres well to standard construction materials.

When mixed with Isolastic, Kerabond T meets EN 12004 class C2ES2 standards for improved, highly deformable adhesives with extended open time.

Mapei Kerabond T White is suitable for indoor and outdoor installation of all types of ceramic tiles and mosaics on floors, walls, and ceilings. Also ideal for spot bonding insulating materials such as expanded polystyrene, expanded polyurethane, rock and glass wool, Eraclit, wood-cement, and sound-deadening panels.

Application Examples:

Can be used with paper-faced or mesh-backed ceramic tiles, including porcelain, single red, and klinker tiles, on:
Conventional renders or cement mortar walls.
Ordinary concrete slabs or reinforced floating slabs, provided they are adequately aged and dry.
Gypsum supports and anhydrite screeds, which should be treated with a primer before application.

Preparing the Substrate

The substrates must be cured, mechanically strong, and free from loose particles, grease, oils, paint, wax, and moisture. Cement substrates should not shrink after tile installation. During spring and summer, renders must cure for at least one week for each centimeter of thickness, while cement screeds should cure for a minimum of 28 days unless made with MAPEI special binders such as Mapecem, Mapecem Pronto, Topcem, or Topcem Pronto. Surfaces heated by sunlight should be dampened with water to cool them down. Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds must be completely dry (with a maximum residual moisture of 0.5%), sufficiently hard, and dust-free. These should be treated with Primer G or Eco Prim T, while areas exposed to high humidity require treatment with Primer S. For more information, refer to MAPEI’s technical documentation regarding substrate preparation before repairing cracks, consolidating rapid-drying screeds, and levelling installation surfaces.

Preparing the Mix

Kerabond should be mixed with clean water to create a homogeneous paste free of lumps. After resting for 5-10 minutes, the mix must be re-mixed and will be ready for use. The recommended water-to-Kerabond ratio is approximately 28-30 parts of water per 100 parts (by weight) of Kerabond grey, which equals about 7-7.5 litres of water for 25 kg of powder. This mix remains workable for at least 8 hours.

Applying the Mix

Kerabond is applied to the substrate using a notched trowel. Choose a trowel that provides coverage to the back of the tiles of at least 65-70% for walls or indoor light foot traffic, and 100% coverage for heavy traffic or outdoor applications. For optimal adhesion, first apply a thin coat of Kerabond using the smooth side of the trowel, followed by the desired thickness using the toothed side. Recommended trowels include:

MAPEI No. 4 square-notched trowel for mosaics up to 5×5 cm.

MAPEI No. 5 V-notched trowel for normal ceramic wall tiles (consumption 2.5-3 kg/m²).

MAPEI No. 6 V-notched trowel for floors, very irregular surfaces, and tiles with high ribs or lugs (consumption approx. 5 kg/m²).

For outdoor ceramic floor and wall coverings exposed to freezing conditions, or for other special uses such as swimming pools, larger tile sizes, or heavy load areas, apply Kerabond evenly to the back of the tile (back-buttering).

Installing the Tiles

It is not necessary to wet the tiles before installation; however, if the backs are very dusty, they should be wiped with clean water. Tiles should be installed under firm pressure to ensure good contact with the adhesive. Kerabond has an open time of 20-30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity, but adverse weather conditions (strong sunlight, drying wind, high temperatures) or highly absorbent substrates may shorten this time to just a few minutes. Regular checks should be made to determine if the adhesive has formed a surface skin or remains fresh to the touch. If a surface skin has formed, the adhesive should be retroweled, and wetting the adhesive is inadvisable, as it can create a non-adhesive film. Any necessary tile adjustments should be made within 60 minutes of installation; after this time, adjustments may become difficult. Tiles installed with Kerabond should not be exposed to washout or rain for at least 24 hours and must be protected from frost and direct sunlight for 5-7 days post-application.

Spot Bonding Insulating Materials

Spot bonding of sound-deadening or insulating panels should be applied using a float or trowel, with the number and thickness of spots determined by the surface flatness and panel weight. It is important to observe the open time, as heavy panels may require temporary shoring until Kerabond begins to set.
