KeraFlex is a cement-based powder, available in grey or white, containing synthetic resins and special additives formulated by MAPEI’s R&D labs. When mixed with water, it forms a highly workable, thixotropic mortar that can be applied on vertical surfaces without slumping or tile slipping, even with heavy tiles. It offers excellent adhesion to typical building materials, hardens with minimal shrinkage, and is resistant to water and frost. Additionally, it has an extended open time for ease of application. Tiling done with KeraFlex should be protected from rain, frost, and strong sunlight for at least 5-7 days, with full readiness after 14 days. Swimming pools can be filled after 21 days.

Key Points:

High workability and thixotropic properties allow vertical application without tile slippage.

Excellent adhesion to a wide range of building materials.

Water and frost-resistant, with minimal shrinkage during curing.

Extended open time ensures flexibility during installation.

KeraFlex is ideal for interior and exterior bonding of ceramic tiles, porcelain, moisture-resistant natural stone, and mosaics on floors and walls. It is also suitable for spot bonding insulating materials such as expanded polystyrene, rock and glass wool, Eraclit® (wood-cement panels), and soundproofing panels. Common applications include bonding tiles to cement-rendered walls, interior aerated concrete blocks, gypsum or anhydrite (with Primer G or Eco Prim T Plus), underfloor heating systems, cement screeds, and interior painted walls with firm, alkali-resistant paint. KeraFlex can also be used for tiling over existing floors when primed with Eco Prim Grip Plus, bonding small-format tiles in swimming pools, and for floors under heavy loads.

Recommendations:

Do not use on concrete subject to shrinkage.

Avoid application on metal surfaces.

Not suitable for adhesive thicknesses over 5 mm.

Avoid use on walls or floors with strong movement or vibration.

Preparation of the Substrate

The substrate must be flat, clean, and free from contamination such as grease, oil, paint, wax, and loose particles. Damp substrates can delay KeraFlex’s curing. Cement substrates should not shrink after tile installation. Renders must cure for at least two weeks, and cement screeds for at least three weeks unless special binders like Mapecem or Topcem are used. Concrete substrates must be at least six weeks old. If exposed to sunlight and heated, dampen the surface with water. Gypsum plaster and anhydrite screeds must be dry (max. 0.5% residual moisture), hard, and laitance-free. These should be mechanically abraded, vacuumed, and primed with Primer G or Eco Prim T Plus. Heated screeds must comply with technical standards such as BS 5385 parts 3, 4, and 5.

Mixing

Mix KeraFlex with clean water until smooth and lump-free, then let it rest for five minutes before re-stirring. The required water is 25-27 parts for KeraFlex Grey and 26-28 parts for KeraFlex White, or approximately 5.0-5.6 litres of water for every 20 kg of powder. When mixed properly, KeraFlex has an 8-hour pot life.

Application

Apply KeraFlex with a notched trowel suitable for the tile size and expected service conditions. First, spread a thin layer using the flat side of the trowel for better adhesion. Then, immediately apply the adhesive using a notched trowel. For large tiles (300×300 mm or more), external applications, swimming pools, or areas with heavy loads, back-butter the tiles for full coverage. The maximum adhesive bed depth is 5 mm.

Installing Tiles

Do not wet the tiles before installation unless they are excessively dusty, in which case dip them in clean water and let them dry. Press the tiles firmly to ensure a minimum 65-70% adhesive coverage in dry areas and 100% in wet or external areas. Under normal conditions, KeraFlex has an open time of about 30 minutes, but unfavourable weather conditions or absorbent substrates can shorten this time. Avoid wetting the adhesive after it skins over, as this will create a non-adhesive film. Tiles can be adjusted within 60 minutes of installation.

Spot-bonding Insulating Materials

For spot-bonding sound-deadening or insulating panels, apply KeraFlex with a trowel or float.
