Keraflex Maxi S1 is a high-performance, deformable cementitious adhesive available as a grey or white powder made from cement and fine graded sands, enriched with synthetic resins and special additives from MAPEI’s Research and Development Laboratories. It offers excellent workability, low dust, and minimal volatile organic compound emissions. When mixed with water, it creates a highly thixotropic, low-viscosity mortar suitable for bonding large ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles (3-15 mm adhesive thickness) and features:
Key Points:
- Excellent adhesion with no vertical slip, ideal for large or heavy tiles on vertical surfaces.
- Adaptability to irregular substrates and tile surfaces.
- Minimal shrinkage and consistent hardening, even when applied thickly.
- Extended open time and adjustability for enhanced installation flexibility.

Keraflex Maxi S1 is ideal for bonding ceramic tiles and stone materials on uneven substrates, both indoors and outdoors, with up to a 15 mm bed depth, eliminating the need for pre-leveling. It is also suitable for spot bonding insulation materials, including expanded polystyrene, rock wool, glass wool, Eraclit® wood-cement panels, sound-deadening panels, and cork. Some applications include:
- Bonding ceramic and moisture-resistant stone tiles on various surfaces like cementitious screeds, underfloor heating, cementitious or lime-based renders, firmly fixed gypsum board, and screw-fixed timber.
- Tiling over existing floors (ceramic, marble, etc.) for interior and exterior applications.
- Installing floors that will be subjected to heavy traffic.
- Bonding floor and wall coverings on Mapelastic waterproofed substrates.
- Bonding tiles or strips with pronounced ribs or lugs, including porcelain, klinker, single-fired tiles, and terracotta.
Preparing the Substrate
Before applying Keraflex Maxi S1, ensure all substrates are cured, structurally sound, clean, crack-free, and free of loose particles, oil, grease, wax, and dust, and that they are sufficiently dry. Cementitious substrates should be cured to avoid shrinkage after tile installation. During warmer months, renders should cure for at least two weeks per centimeter of thickness, while cementitious screeds need a minimum of three weeks, unless specific MAPEI screeds (Mapecem, Mapecem Pronto, Topcem, or Topcem Pronto) are used. Cool down sun-exposed surfaces by dampening with water. Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds should be dry, firm, and dust-free and require a primer, such as Eco Prim T or Mapeprim SP.
Preparing the Mix
Mix Keraflex Maxi S1 with clean water to create a smooth, lump-free paste, allowing it to rest for about five minutes before re-stirring. For the white mix, use 5.2-5.6 liters of water per 20 kg of powder, and for the grey, 5.0-5.4 liters. When prepared correctly, the mix has a pot life of approximately 8 hours.
Applying the Mix
Use a notched trowel to apply Keraflex Maxi S1 to the substrate, selecting a trowel size that ensures full tile back coverage. Start by spreading a thin layer with the trowel’s straight edge, followed by the required thickness with the notched side. For large tiles (over 300×300 mm), outdoor tiling, high-load floors, or submerged installations like pools, use the back-buttering technique to achieve complete coverage.
Installing the Tiles
There’s no need to wet tiles before installation; only dust-heavy tiles may be briefly dipped in clean water, then dried. Press tiles firmly to ensure good adhesive contact. Keraflex Maxi S1 has an open time of about 30 minutes under normal conditions, but this can decrease in direct sun, wind, or heat. Regularly check that no skin forms on the adhesive; if it does, re-spread without adding water. Tiles can be adjusted within 60 minutes of installation. Protect the tiled area from rain for at least 24 hours and from frost or strong sun for 5-7 days.
Spot-Bonding Insulating Materials
For spot-bonding soundproofing or insulation panels, apply Keraflex Maxi S1 with a trowel or float, adjusting the thickness based on surface level and panel weight.
