Mapecem is a special fast-setting hydraulic binder used to create rapid-setting and drying screeds with controlled shrinkage, making it ideal for installations that require quick turnaround. When mixed with dry, clean graded aggregates and water, Mapecem hardens within hours and fully dries in 24 hours, regardless of the thickness, with a residual moisture content of less than 2%. Its high mechanical strength makes it perfect for screeds where resilient, textile, timber, ceramic, or stone flooring needs to be installed within 24 hours.

Key Points:

Fast-setting and drying hydraulic binder for screeds.

Fully dries within 24 hours, regardless of thickness.

Ideal for flooring installations such as resilient, textile, timber, ceramic, or stone.

Mapecem is ideal for preparing both floating and bonded screeds on existing or new slabs for the installation of wood, PVC, linoleum, ceramic tiles, carpet, or other flooring where fast drying is crucial to minimize downtime. It enables screeds to be ready for light foot traffic in 2-3 hours and fully dry within 24 hours for parquet or resilient flooring installation. Ceramic tiles and natural stone can be installed after just 3-4 hours. Mapecem is also perfect for patching and repairing screeds in high-traffic areas like supermarkets, hospitals, and airports, and for screeds incorporating underfloor heating systems.

Preparing the Substrate

For unbonded or floating applications, any substrate is suitable for a Mapecem screed, provided it is isolated with a polyethylene sheet or similar material. For bonded screeds, the substrate must be dry, free from cracks, and capable of withstanding compressive and tensile strength. It should also be clear of dust, loose materials, paints, wax, oil, and traces of gypsum. Existing joints in the substrate must be extended through the screed.

Unbonded Screeds (35 – 70 mm thick)

Preparing the Mix

Mapecem should be mixed quickly and thoroughly with water and graded aggregates (0-8 mm) for a maximum of 3-4 minutes using a mixer or batcher. The mixture must be spread and leveled within 30 minutes after mixing, ensuring the water quantity is sufficient to create a cohesive mass that allows for tamping without leaving a cement film. Mixing can be done in a drum mixer, ordinary concrete mixer, screw mixer, or manually with a shovel. An automatic pressure pump can also be used for placement. Strict adherence to dosage and mixing time instructions is essential.

Spreading the Mix

The Mapecem mix is placed onto the substrate similarly to ordinary concrete. A polyethylene sheet should be laid down (even over bituminous membranes or other waterproof substrates) to create a free-flowing layer between the Mapecem screed and the existing substrate, preventing rising damp. On compressible substrates, areas with piping, or thicknesses exceeding 60 mm, galvanized metal reinforcement should be incorporated in accordance with AS 3958.1. Preparation methods mirror those used for standard cement screeds, including levelling strips, spreading the mix, and tamping for a smooth finish. It is advisable to insert a 1 cm thick anti-fracture material (such as felt board, cork, or polystyrene) around the perimeter and columns. If work is interrupted for more than an hour, screeds should be cut perpendicularly, and 20-30 cm long, 3-6 mm diameter rods should be inserted at intervals of 20-30 cm to ensure proper bonding and prevent cracks and uneven levels.

Floating Screeds (35 – 70 mm thick)

The preparation and application of floating screeds follow the same procedures as unbonded screeds, with the addition of insulation or heating systems. The insulation must have high compressive resistance, not compressing more than 3 mm under the anticipated load. For underfloor heating pipes, they should be installed a minimum of 25 mm below the screed surface, with reinforcing mesh placed over them. Underfloor heating can be commissioned after 4 days.

Bonded Screeds (10 – 70 mm thick)

The mix preparation, proportions, and spreading methods for bonded screeds are identical to those for floating screeds. However, a Planicrete SP bonding slurry must first be applied to the clean substrate. The dosage for the bonding slurry is one part by weight of Planicrete SP to one part by weight of Mapecem. To ensure proper bonding, the slurry should be applied at a thickness of 2-3 mm just before installing the Mapecem screed (using the fresh-on-fresh technique). For bonded screeds thicker than 50 mm, incorporating galvanized mesh reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1 is recommended.
