Mapelastic AquaDefense Tanking Kit is a ready-to-use solution designed for rapidly waterproofing bathrooms, wet rooms, and showers, making them tile-ready in just 4 hours. The kit includes Mapelastic AquaDefense and Mapeband PE 120, ideal for forming protective layers in areas exposed to moisture and running water.
Key Points:
- Components: Mapelastic AquaDefense, a fast-drying, solvent-free synthetic resin paste, and Mapeband PE 120, a waterproof PVC tape for sealing corners and joints, create a comprehensive waterproofing system.
- Application: Mapelastic AquaDefense is easy to apply with a roller, brush, or trowel on various surfaces and dries quickly to form a flexible, non-sticky membrane.
- Performance: It becomes resistant to light pedestrian traffic within 3-4 hours, providing a strong bond for tile adhesives, and is durable against substrate movement due to temperature changes.
- Durability: Once cured, the kit withstands regular cleaning, water, and alkaline solutions, making it suitable for long-lasting moisture protection in residential spaces.
The kit includes: 1 x 7.5 kg bucket of AquaDefense and 1 x 10-meter roll of Mapeband PE 120

The Mapelastic AquaDefense Tanking Kit is designed to create waterproofing layers before installing ceramic, stone, or mosaic finishes in areas such as:
- Bathrooms and shower cubicles
- Wet rooms
- Kitchens
It can be applied to various surfaces, including:
- Concrete
- Cementitious screeds and screeds with special binders (e.g., Topcem, Topcem Pronto, Mapecem, or Mapecem Pronto)
- Plasterboard (internal applications only)
- Existing ceramic, terrazzo, or stone coatings
- Cementitious render
- Tilebacker boards
Substrate Preparation
Ensure all substrates are well-cured, stable, clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, cement laitance, paint, or any substance that may compromise adhesion. Cement-based substrates must be dry with no rising damp, and any surface dust must be fully removed. Uneven surfaces can be prepared with an appropriate MAPEI leveling compound. For old ceramic floors with hollow tile joints or where leveling is needed, apply a smoothing layer before using Mapelastic AquaDefense. Carefully inspect and clean such substrates to remove coatings like wax or water-repellent treatments, using products such as Mapei UltraCare or by abrasion.
Pay close attention to expansion and fillet joints between horizontal and vertical surfaces, applying Mapeband PE 120, bonded with Mapelastic AquaDefense, in these areas. For old ceramic and stone floors, prime the surface with Eco PrimGrip Plus before applying Mapelastic AquaDefense.
Product Application
Apply Mapelastic AquaDefense in two even coats (0.4 mm per coat) using a long-haired roller, brush, or trowel. Let the first coat dry, indicated by a darker, matte finish, before applying the second coat diagonally (approximately 1 hour drying time at 23°C and 50% humidity). Ensure the final thickness is at least 0.8 mm to create a strong, flexible, and continuous film, free from substrate imperfections.
For substrates with cracks where an anti-fracture membrane is required, insert Mapetex 50 reinforcement into the first coat while it’s still fresh, pressing down with a bubble-breaker roller. Once dry, apply the second coat to fully embed Mapetex 50. Note that drying times may be longer as the layer thickness increases with Mapetex 50.
A water-tightness test can be performed 12 hours after the final coat is applied in bathroom settings.
Tile Installation
Tiles can be laid 4 hours after the second coat of Mapelastic AquaDefense at 23°C and 50% humidity, using a C2-class MAPEI adhesive per EN 12004 standards. For rapid tiling, use Keraquick S1 (C2FT S1) or fast-setting products from the Ultralite range. Grout the tile joints with a cementitious grout like Ultracolor Plus or an epoxy grout such as Kerapoxy, Kerapoxy Easy Design, or Kerapoxy CQ. Seal expansion joints with MAPEI sealants like Mapesil AC or Mapesil LM, as required.
