Mapelastic Smart is a two-component, high-flexibility cementitious mortar designed for waterproofing balconies, terraces, bathrooms, and swimming pools. Formulated with cementitious binders, fine aggregates, special additives, and synthetic polymers in water dispersion, it provides a plastic consistency upon mixing. This versatile mortar can be applied using a brush, roller, or spray with a worm screw rendering machine on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, achieving a thickness of approximately 2 mm. Its high-quality synthetic resins ensure that the hardened layer remains flexible under various environmental conditions. Additionally, Mapelastic Smart effectively resists aggressive substances like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and soluble salts found in seawater or soil, offering excellent bonding properties on well-prepared cementitious, ceramic, and marble surfaces. The product’s durability against UV rays and its ability to withstand harsh climatic conditions make it suitable for use in coastal or industrial areas, ensuring long-lasting protection.

Key Points:

Two-Component Flexibility: Mapelastic Smart features high flexibility and crack-bridging capabilities over 2 mm for effective waterproofing.

Versatile Application: It can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray on horizontal and vertical surfaces, achieving a thickness of approximately 2 mm.

Chemical Resistance: The mortar is resistant to aggressive atmospheric substances, including carbon dioxide and soluble salts like chlorides and sulphates.

Durable Performance: Its UV resistance and durability make it suitable for challenging environments, ensuring long-lasting protection in various climatic conditions.

Mapelastic Smart is specifically designed for waterproofing hydraulic projects, including channels, dam faces, swimming pools, basins, and storage tanks, as well as balconies and terraces. It is particularly effective for waterproofing irregular surfaces and protecting concrete structures, including renders with hairline cracks and other cementitious surfaces that are prone to cracking due to vibrations.

Application Examples:

Waterproofing hydraulic channels, concrete water tanks, dam faces, and basins, including those for potable water.

Waterproofing bathrooms, showers, balconies, terraces, and swimming pools prior to installing ceramic tiles.

Waterproofing plasterboard, render, cementitious surfaces, lightweight cement blocks, and marine-grade plywood.

Providing a flexible protective layer for new or repaired concrete structures that experience minor deformation under load.

Safeguarding cementitious renders or concrete with shrinkage cracks or minor movements caused by thermal changes or dynamic stresses from vehicle traffic against water infiltration and environmental aggression.

Protecting repaired concrete pillars, beams, and road or railway viaducts using Mapegrout or Planitop products from carbon dioxide penetration.

Shielding concrete surfaces from exposure to seawater, de-icing salts (such as sodium or calcium chloride), and sulphates.

Advantages:

Mapelastic Smart offers exceptional waterproofing capabilities, flexible protection against cracking, and durability in harsh environmental conditions, ensuring long-lasting integrity for various structures.

Preparation of the Substrate

  1. A) Protection and Waterproofing of Concrete Structures

To ensure effective waterproofing of concrete structures and elements, such as pillars and beams for road and railway viaducts, cooling towers, chimneys, underpasses, retaining walls, and various applications in coastal areas, the surface must be sound and thoroughly clean. Remove all cement laitance, flaky parts, and traces of powder, grease, oil, and release agents using sandblasting or high-pressure water washing. For structures in poor condition, damaged areas should be removed through hand or mechanical means, or by utilizing water jet blasting, which minimizes damage to reinforcement rods and prevents vibrations that could lead to hairline cracks in adjacent concrete. After completely removing rust through sandblasting, repair using Mapefer 1K and a suitable ready-mixed mortar from the Mapegrout or Planitop range.

  1. B) Waterproofing of Terraces, Balconies, and Swimming Pools

Cementitious Screeds: Seal any settlement cracks caused by plastic or hygrometric shrinkage with Eporip. If necessary, level out thicknesses of up to 20 mm using Adesilex P4 or Planitop Fast 330.

Existing Floors: Ensure existing floors and coverings, such as ceramic, gres, klinker, or terracotta, are well bonded to the substrate and free of substances that could compromise the bond, like grease, oil, wax, and paint. Remove all traces of materials affecting Mapelastic Smart’s adhesion using mechanical means as needed.

Renders: New cementitious-based or lime-cement renders must be adequately cured (at least 7 days per cm of thickness in good weather), well bonded to the substrate, resistant, and free of dust and paint.

PVC Structural Wall Systems: Mechanically scratch the PVC substrate with a coarse diamond disk on a low-speed grinder to achieve a keyable finish. Apply a patching coat of the membrane along non-structural movement joints, which should not be counted as one of the two required main coats.

Priming: Mapelastic Smart does not require a primer on well-prepared substrates; simply dampen the surfaces with water. Exceptions include:

For excessively porous substrates, use Primer 3296 to seal the surface.

For very damp substrates, use Planiseal MR.

Metal and PVC details (non-immersed), as well as existing ceramic and natural stone substrates, should be primed with Eco Prim Grip Plus to ensure proper bonding. For immersed applications, prime metal and PVC details with Eporip and sand seed with Quartz 0.5 AU.

Waterproofing Detail: Use Mapeband TPE or Mapeband Flex Roll to seal structural joints and those subject to high dynamic stress. Areas such as expansion joints, construction joints, and junctions (e.g., floor-wall, wall-wall) require special preparation. MAPEI’s flexible polymer band products, including Mapeband, Mapeband Easy, and Mapeband SA (self-adhesive), are designed for rapid installation and reliable performance in these critical areas. Refer to specific technical data sheets for detailed installation guidelines.

Preparation of the Mortar: Begin by pouring component B (liquid) into a clean, suitable container. Slowly add 75% of component A (powder) while stirring with a mechanical mixer. Mix Mapelastic Smart thoroughly for a few minutes, ensuring no powder remains stuck to the container’s sides or bottom. Add the remaining 25% of component A and continue stirring until achieving a perfectly homogeneous mixture. Use a low-speed mechanical mixer for this process to minimize air incorporation. Avoid preparing the mix by hand. Alternatively, preparation can be done with a mortar mixer, which is typically provided with mortar sprayers. Ensure the mix is homogeneous and lump-free before pouring into the pump’s hopper.
