Data Sheets
Mapetex is a specialized non-woven fabric designed to reduce stresses within the substrate, thereby maintaining the integrity of the tiled surface. When applied correctly, Mapetex effectively dissipates stresses in various types of floor substrates, helping to prevent cracks in the tile finish, particularly over imperfect surfaces. In many instances, it eliminates the need for additional overboarding with plywood or other materials, making it ideal for both restoration projects and new constructions, including those using underfloor heating systems. Produced using advanced techniques, Mapetex features high mechanical strength and an optimized surface that enhances compatibility with MAPEI tile adhesives while accommodating lateral movements in substrates.
Key Points:
- Stress Alleviation: Designed to reduce stresses within the substrate to preserve the tiled finish.
- Crack Prevention: Helps prevent cracks in tiles when applied over less-than-perfect surfaces.
- Eliminates Overboarding: Often removes the need for additional materials like plywood.
- User-Friendly: Easy to apply and suitable for various applications, including underfloor heating systems.

Mapetex is a specialized non-woven fabric designed to alleviate stresses within the substrate, thereby preserving the integrity of the tiled finish. When used correctly, it effectively dissipates stresses in various floor substrates, helping to prevent cracks in the tile surface, especially over imperfect substrates. In many situations, Mapetex eliminates the need for additional overboarding with plywood or other materials, making it suitable for both restoration projects and new constructions, including those that incorporate underfloor or undertile heating systems. Its applications include use on problematic substrates, such as mixed substrates within the same area, floating chipboard floors, existing tiled floors, and heated floors where natural stone finishes are to be installed. Additionally, Mapetex is ideal for timber substrates like plywood and tongue-and-groove floorboards, as it bridges hairline cracks, accommodates stress-relieving joints, and enables tiled areas in adjoining rooms to interlink without the need for threshold movement joints. It also permits the installation of tiles diagonally over existing opposing movement joints, allows tiling on green concrete and sand-cement screeds, bridges cracks caused by shrinkage stresses, and protects natural stone from substrate-generated stresses.
Preparing the Substrate
The substrate must be dry (except for green concrete and sand-cement screeds), clean, flat, mechanically strong, and solid. It should be free of any substances that could inhibit adhesion, such as dust, laitance, grease, and wax. Existing floor finishes must be securely bonded; otherwise, they should be removed. Hairline cracks in concrete or screed are acceptable, but penetrating or active cracks must be repaired appropriately. Cracks in sand-cement screeds can be fixed with MAPEI Eporip or MAPEI Epojet, ensuring that these cracks are limited to the screed and do not extend into the underlying concrete. Any penetrating cracks in concrete should be evaluated by a qualified Structural Engineer before proceeding.
Application as an Anti-Fracture Membrane
To use Mapetex as an anti-fracture membrane, pre-cut the roll to the desired size using a utility knife or scissors, then loosely lay it in position. Bond Mapetex directly to the substrate with one of the recommended adhesives using a suitable notched trowel, such as a 4 mm mosaic trowel. Spread the adhesive ahead of where the Mapetex will be laid and press it firmly into the wet adhesive, preferably using a roller. Ensure the Mapetex is fully bedded without exceeding the adhesive’s open time. For optimal results, overlap the Mapetex sheets by 10 mm to ensure adhesive contact within the overlap. Note that when installing mosaics (in small domestic or light-duty areas), adjacent runs of Mapetex should be butt jointed. Once the adhesive has hardened—approximately 3 hours for rapid-setting products or 24 hours for standard-setting products—the tiled finish can be installed. The choice of adhesive will depend on the tile type and size, as well as the substrate beneath the Mapetex. Floors can be grouted with Ultracolor Plus, Keracolor FF, or Keracolor GG, with Fugolastic added to the Keracolor grouts for enhanced durability.
Application as a Removable Floor System
Mapetex can also serve as a substrate for installing floor tiles, particularly when the flooring may need to be removed, making it suitable for display areas in tile showrooms. Prime absorbent substrates before installation. Use Mapetex Strips that are at least 10 cm long, bonding them to the floor. With the 1 m wide Mapetex Rolls, secure a minimum of three strips per edge for each linear meter of fabric. For the 2 m wide Mapetex, attach three strips per edge and three strips in the center for each linear meter. Once the strips are positioned and bonded, apply the Mapetex (printed side down) and firmly press it onto the strips, ensuring that adjacent sections are butt jointed with the strips centered. To prevent adhesive from penetrating the substrate, cover the butt joints with tape. Select an adhesive suitable for the tile type, size, and underlying substrate. Flooring can be installed over intermediate movement joints or stress-relieving joints, but structural movement joints must be carried through to the surface of the tiled finish. Floors can be grouted with Ultracolor Plus, or if Keracolor FF or Keracolor GG are preferred, they should be mixed with Fugolastic.
Removal of the Flooring
To remove a tile (preferably from a corner) along with the adhesive and underlying Mapetex from the Mapetex Strip, use a suction cup, cold chisel, or trowel. It may be necessary to cut the Mapetex with a utility knife. Lift and remove the tiled floor, and if replacing it with a new finish, the remaining bonded Mapetex Strips can be reused. Avoid allowing dust, dirt, or other substances to accumulate on the Mapetex Strip that could affect adhesion. Proceed to install the new tiled floor as described above.
